A cold case homicide from 1976 has been solved, according to investigators in Summit County Utah.

39-year-old cold case solved in Summit County

After nearly 40 years a Summit County murder has finally been solved. On October 28, 1976 William Ercanbrack was murdered while opening the gate to his Clarks Canyon Ranch near Coalville. The 47-year-old was shot in the back with a high-powered rifle from someone laying in wait along a fence line hundreds of yards away.

The perpetrator of the crime has been deceased for awhile now. Detectives report that they had enough evidence to bring the case to trial. Had the individual responsible still been alive, he would have been brought to justice.

Investigators reviewed the information the informant gave them to their case files and everything lined up. They named the suspect in this case as George B Toone. Toone died of natural causes in San Bernardino California on September 11, 2001.

On Oct. 28, 1976, 47-year-old Ercanbrack was murdered while opening the gate to his ranch in Clarks Canyon, seven miles east of Coalville, according to a press release from Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

Ercanbrack was shot in the back from a distance of 300 feet with a high-powered small caliber rifle, the release states.

“The investigation at the time showed an unknown shooter was laying in wait along a fence line and had used a fence post to rest on while taking the shot, which killed Ercanbrack,” according to the release.
