We have all been hurt lately by the many articles about violence against children. This article attempts to answer the question- Why?

The horror of a child murder infuriates policemen and powerfully motivates prosecutors to convict the guilty.

It attracts and then repels the public's attention as the woeful facts come out -- a baby or young child abused and killed in ways that defy credulity.

It's always happened, say professionals, but contemporary culture now brings the glare of publicity while the categories of culprits grow distressingly familiar -- frustrated boyfriends and step-fathers, distraught mothers, despairing "family annihilator" fathers and sex offenders who fear their victims' testimony.
