Robert Crissman Jr. was a junkie and high school graduate who ripped off his relatives in Armstrong County, stealing scrap metal from an aunt, lifting cash from an employer’s safe and filching costume jewelry from his mother to support his heroin habit.

But despite arrests going back more than a decade on drug, drinking and theft charges, Crissman, 38, apparently had never turned violent until Thursday morning when, police say, he beat a friend’s girlfriend with a ceramic toilet lid — so savagely that the lid was left in pieces — and then strangled her with a string...

Investigators say Crissman killed Tammy Long, 55, of Rayburn at her home several hours after he ran away from the Armstrong County Jail. He had been lodged there since July 23 on a probation violation.

Testimony is scheduled to start Tuesday morning in the murder trial of Robert Edward Crissman Jr., 39, the Armstrong County Jail escapee who allegedly killed a Rayburn woman while on the lam last summer.

After questioning potential jurors for several hours, President Judge Kenneth Valasek empaneled a six-man, six-woman jury, with two alternates, early Monday afternoon.

During her opening argument Tuesday to the six-man, six-woman jury, Assistant District Attorney Katie Charlton used the metaphor about someone being able to run, but not hide.

“The evidence will show you Robert Crissman Jr. ran from the Armstrong County Jail directly to the home of Tammy Long,” Charlton said. “He killed her her, took her truck and ran from police. He can't hide from the facts of this case.”

In his opening statement, defense counsel Charles Pascal asked the jury to be “open-minded and fair” toward Crissman in evaluating the testimony

Long’s boyfriend, Terry Slagle, was one of 10 people that testified after being called to the stand by County District Attorney Scott Andreassi and Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Charlton yesterday.

Slagle, who was Long’s companion for almost 18 years, learned about Crissman’s arrival when he was getting ready for work early that morning – when Long told him “Robbie” was having car trouble.

Little did he know after he allowed “Robbie” to use his phone, drink a cup of coffee and have a cigarette, “Robbie” was going to strangle his girlfriend with a shoelace and steal a 22-inch Magnum rifle, a 55-inch television and his burgundy pick-up truck while Slagle was installing carpet in Clymer...

Prosecutors in Armstrong County today presented the first scientific evidence they say ties Robert Crissman Jr. to the murder of Tammy Long.

Forensic scientist Timothy Gavel of the state police crime lab in Greensburg testified that blood stains on a T-shirt found under a bed in Long's home matched both Long and Crissman. Investigators say they found the shirt and a pair of pants during a search of Long's home and that the clothes were those worn by Crissman when he went to Long's home the day he escaped from the Armstrong County Jail.

After only about two hours of deliberation, a jury ruled Robert Crissman guilty of first- and second-degree murder Thursday...

District Attorney Scott Andreassi reminded jurors of a key piece of evidence: The shoe lace around Long's neck belonged to one of Crissman's shoes, which he wore when he showed up at her house shortly after escaping.

Valasek sentenced Crissman, 39, of Boggs to life in prison without the possibility of parole for his conviction for first- and second-degree murder. He also was sentenced to 1 1⁄2 to 8 years for escape and related offenses. All sentences run concurrently.
