India - At least 28 dead, 25 missing as trains derail on bridge

At least 28 passengers are dead and 25 are missing after two trains derailed running across a culvert on the Machak River about 160kms away from the city of Bhopal in Madyha Pradesh. The accident occured at 11.30pm last night but survivors say no help arrived until 3.30am. It is feared hundreds may be dead.

"They did not inform us anything, later when we alighted the train, it was a fearful sight all the coaches after S-2 were not visible," Chowksey said. "People were screaming and struggling in dark," he said.
"A lot of people have been killed and injured but there was no first aid in the train. Not even in the AC coaches. It was only at 3.30 am when the train reached Harda that three four nurses and two doctors were made available there," he said.*
The Kamanayani Express and Janata Express were bound for Mumbai and Varanasi. They derailed a few minutes apart on a bridge near Harda Station. Initial reports suggest the Kamanayani derailed first and then the Janata ran into it.

According to the BBC, the tracks collapsed because of flooding, causing the trains to derail and the carriages to flood with water. It's still not clear how many people were aboard the trains. 300 survivors reported so far but rescue operations are sounding chaotic, to be honest.

MP Government spokesman Anupam Rajan said, "29 bodies, including those of 13 men, 11 women and five children, have been recovered so far from the mishap site between Khirkiya and Harda, about 160 km from Bhopal."
It is also being reported that two other trains crossed the culvert just eight minutes before the crash and that the flood may have been caused by the opening of a nearby dam.

The death toll seems to be 29. More details of the accident have emerged and they are truly tragic. People had three things to survive: the crash itself, the floods that swept the train and then the torn overhead power cables that electrified the water and parts of the trains.

Many did not escape all three and survivors have spoken of having to watch family members die. One man lost 11 members of his family.

Railway authorities say the accident spot was never marked as high-risk.

Ganesh Wadle, a resident of Bhopal said just 20 feet away from his coach, he saw two passengers fleeing from the wreckage only to get trapped in high-voltage overhead wires which snapped and fell on the tracks. "Within minutes, their bodies were tossed up in a ball of fire and turned into ashes," recounted Wadle. "But those inside were safe. They cringed to touch anything metallic. I looked out of the window and continued to witness serial explosions lighting up the sky," he added.

A badly shaken survivor said the first-aid was provided to them only at 3.30 am when they reached Harda railway station.
