    Former football player and veteran sports journalist Frank Gifford has died, his family announced on Sunday. He was 84.

    In a statement, his family said:

    It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and friend, Frank Gifford. Frank died suddenly this beautiful Sunday morning of natural causes at his Connecticut home...

    Frank Gifford's family announced Wednesday that signs of chronic traumatic encephopathy (CTE) were found in his brain after his death

    The disease causes cognitive and behavior symptoms and may have been triggered by concussions sustained in his legendary football career

    Gifford's family decided to donate his brain for medical study in order advance medical research in the field of football-related brain injuries
