Australia - Victor Twartz, 91, ex-surgeon charged with smuggling cocaine, Aug 2015
A retired oral surgeon in Sydney, Australia, has been charged with importing 4.5kgs (10lbs) of cocaine worth $1million hidden in bars of soap. He's thought to be the oldest person in Australia to be charged with drug smuggling, and appeared in court Tuesday.
Surprisingly, family had notified police in advance that they believed the 91-year-old was being 'groomed' by a drug gang in New Delhi, India, who had told Victor Twartz a scam tale of needing help to free up a multi-million inheritance. Police say Twartz was warned but did not listen and chose to travel to India. At the last minute, as he left India, he was asked to deliver a gift pack of soap to someone in Australia.
Victor Twartz said he believed he would not go to jail but is not concerned if he does.
"As far as I'm concerned, I'm very glad that Customs had found it because I'm very against the young people taking drugs and it means that that much was stopped from getting to them," he said.
