AMBER ALERT: Police continue search for missing toddler through the night
Toddler taken during car theft; stolen Honda Civic recovered without child inside
Jul 24 2015
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is searching for the child, who was last seen outside a unit at the Ravenwood apartment complex on South Old Kings Road about 2:20 a.m. Nearly two hours later, police issued an alert for Lonzie, who was believed to be taken during a car theft.
According to Chief Tom Hackney, the mother's boyfriend, 32-year-old William Ebron, was getting ready to pick up the mother, 25-year-old Lonna Lauramore, from work at Wacko's Gentlemen's Club around 2 a.m. He gathered Lonzie and his 5-year-old sister into an orange 1995 Honda Civic.
Before leaving the complex, Ebron (pictured in JSO booking photo) had to run back into the apartment. He left the car running along with the two children inside. The little girl ran up after him and told Ebron that she was scared. When they went back to the parking lot, they saw the Civic leaving, driven by an unknown person, with the toddler still inside the car.

AMBER Alert for missing 21-month-old Jacksonville boy
July 24, 2015
Police say the boyfriend, William Ebron Jr., of the mother, Lonna Lauramore Barton, was getting ready to take Lonzie and his 5-year-old sister to pick up their mom from work.
Ebron, before going to pick up Lonna Barton from work, put the children in the car and went to the laundromat and put a load of clothes in, he told a detective during an interview. He then drove back to the apartment to use cocaine, leaving the children in the car with the engine running.
The 5-year-old then came into the apartment and told the man "she's scared." The boyfriend went back outside and that's when he saw the orange 1995 Honda Civic being driven away with Lonzie inside.
Ebron told detectives Friday that he dropped off Lonna Barton at Wacko's Gentlemen's Club around 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Ebron said he put a load of clothes in at a nearby laundromat and then went back to the apartment to use powder cocaine. That's when he left the children in the car with the car running. He said two minutes later he heard the vehicle leaving and ran outside to see it exiting onto Old Kings Road.
Detectives found video from 12:33 a.m. Friday which shows Ebron going into a Kangaroo gas station at Baymeadows and Old Kings Road.

Police release video in Lonzie case, claim Ruben Ebron murdered little boy
Police cancel Amber Alert, work case as murder
Aug 03 2015
Police announced late Monday the Amber Alert for 21-month-old Lonzie Barton is canceled and they are 100 percent sure the toddler who disappeared 10 days ago disappeared at the hands of the mother's boyfriend.
"I'm cancelling the Amber Alert and not working this as an abduction anymore," Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Chief of Investigations Tom Hackney said. "We are working this as a murder case. You need to know that. Ruben Ebron needs to know that."
This comes after the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office obtained surveillance video that it said shows Ebron abandoning the car he claimed was stolen with Lonzie Barton inside and running away minutes before he called 911 to report it stolen and the toddler taken.
JSO: Story 'crumbling' for Lonzie Barton murder suspect
August 5, 2015
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Twenty-one-month-old Lonzie Barton was murdered and not abducted like originally reported by 32-year-old Ruben Ebron, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Large-scale search efforts by authorities to find Lonzie wound down after Sunday, Aug. 2, ten days after he was originally reported missing by Ebron. On Monday, the toddler was added to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's list of unsolved Amber Alerts alongside 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings.
JSO Chief of Investigations Tom Hackney, in a media briefing on Aug. 3, implored the family and friends of Ebron to get him to tell the police what he knows. Hackney even asked Ebron himself to come forward with the location of Lonzie's body.

Police taunting, suspect denial mark back and forth in Lonzie case
Video perhaps better than DNA, experts say
Aug 6, 2015
In police briefings, the chief of Jacksonville’s crime investigation unit has taunted the man he believes is responsible for the disappearance of Lonzie Barton, challenging William Ruben Ebron Jr. to confess and promising that the cops are closing in.
The investigators’ biggest publicly shared breakthrough in the case that began in the early morning hours of July 24 was the discovery of a home surveillance video.
The grainy images found more than a week after the 21-month-old toddler disappeared show what appears to be Ebron’s distinctive Honda speeding past the camera and then minutes later a man described as Ebron running the other way toward his apartment. It was the same night he reported the vehicle stolen with Lonzie in it.
Initially Ebron fought back in public interviews with The Florida Star and a Jacksonville television station. He declined an interview with The Florida Times-Union.
In his public comments, he said he wanted the boy — he referred to as “my child” in a police report — found as much as anyone.

As active police search for Lonzie is suspended, volunteers continue to search
Aug. 8, 2015
21-month-old Lonzie Barton, the most important question remains unanswered: where is he?
Ruben Ebron continues to be the prime suspect in Lonzie's disappearance, but according to investigators, 15 days later, Ebron remains silent about where the child might be.
Police suspended their active search last weekend but there is still hope and work being done to find Lonzie.
It's been 15 days since the call was made from the Ravenwood Apartments saying that Lonzie was missing. While Saturday marked the first full weekend that there has not been an active police search, the Jacksonville community is doing everything they can to bring Lonzie home.

Mother of suspect in Lonzie case questions evidence, says State Attorney's Office bullied her
The mother of the main suspect in toddler Lonzie Barton's disappearance said she questions the validity of the video recently released in the case and said that the State Attorney's Office — even State Attorney Angela Corey herself — tried to bully her last week.
The State Attorney’s Office said it was the other way around concerning the interview.
“The hostility came from one direction — Wanda Ebron,” according to a statement released by Jackie Barnard. “Mrs. Ebron was hostile, uncooperative and evasive in the interview.”
Ebron, 58, said the State Attorney’s Office kept her and her husband, William Ebron Sr., separate when they questioned the two about their son, William Ruben Ebron Jr., on Thursday after being subpoenaed.
