Watch: Mother of Lonzie Barton told police she believes her son overdosed
By Larry Hannan Fri, Nov 13, 2015

In an interview with police six days after her son went missing, Lonna Lauramore Barton tells police she now believes the toddler got a hold of some drugs that her live-in boyfriend kept in their apartment and accidentally overdosed.
William Ruben Ebron Jr. then “freaked out” and came up with a story for what happened, Lauramore Barton said.

The interview was part of materials released by prosecutors Friday in compliance with public-records requests filed by The Florida Times-Union and Jacksonville television stations.

On Aug. 14, police processed the exterior of Ebron's car for possible evidence in Lonzie's disappearance. Investigators found damage to the undercarriage, including scrapes on the bottom of the front bumper and scrapes at the front and rear of the car, according to an evidence report. There were "pine needles lodged in the undercarriage and front grill, what appeared to be dirty (collected as unknown substance) on the sides of the vehicle behind the tires," along with an unknown light brown substance and what appeared to be engine oil or grease on the sides of the car behind the tires.

At first, Ebron appeared very calm, recounting the events leading up to Lonzie’s disappearance. Once the questioning turns to drugs or holes in his story, Ebron appear to become frustrated.

Documents suggest Lonzie dead before reported abduction
Garrett Pelican, WTLV December 5, 2015

Court documents released Friday are revealing stunning new details in the state's case against Ruben Ebron, including suggestions that missing toddler Lonzie Barton died before Ebron reported him missing back in July.

Several days before his disappearance, Lonzie was drooling blood, had a head injury and was unable to eat, Ebron recalled, according to a police report. But, he told police, no one took the toddler to see a doctor.

In the hours after the toddler went missing, a cadaver dog searching the exterior of Ebron's car "indicated a positive response to the presence of the odor of decomposition" along the driver's side of the vehicle," according to a separate report.

Lonna Barton testifies Ruben Ebron sold drugs in front of Lonzie

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Lonna Barton, the mother of the toddler missing since July, testified Friday that her boyfriend, Ruben Ebron sold drugs in front of her children, including the hours before he reported 21-month-old Lonzie missing.

Barton, the mother of the toddler who pleaded guilty to similar charges on Wednesday, testified that she met Ebron in February of last year and knew she could get cocaine from him. She later moved in with him and witnessed him selling drugs to others, sometimes with her children present.

Jacksonville sheriff: 'We strongly believe we have found the remains of Lonzie Barton'
By Larry Hannan & Dana Treen Mon, Jan 11, 2016

A day that was supposed to have a jury selected in the trial of William Ruben Ebron Jr. took a monumental turn with police believing they have found the remains of toddler Lonzie Barton after being led by Ebron to an area around Florida 9B and Philips Highway.

    https://goo.gl/maps/oTy6AAYmFhJ2

Earlier in the day and shortly before a jury was scheduled to be selected in Ebron’s child-neglect trial, he waived his right to a speedy trial. His lawyers asked for and received a continuance, so he will not be tried this week as expected. It is now unclear if Ebron or Lonzie’s mother, Lonna Lauramore Barton, will face additional charges in the toddler’s death.

Jacksonville police began a search Sunday night following new information from Ebron that led detectives to an area about eight miles south of Old Kings Road where he and Lauramore Barton lived at Ravenwood Apartments.

    [...]

He emphasized that the discovery opens new doors in the investigation, leaving questions such as if Lauamore Barton knew what happened before she left for work as a dancer at Wacko’s gentlemen’s club or if any new charges will be filed.

“There’s a lot more of this investigation to unfold,” he said. “We have new facts now, we have new things to talk about.”

Chief Tom Hackney said while it’s a sad day confirming Lonzie’s death, it’s also a first step in justice.

He said the child was “treated like a piece of trash. That’s just wrong.

Investigators say toddler Lonzie Barton's remains have been found
    Jan 11, 2016

Authorities in Florida say they think they have found the remains of a toddler who was reported missing last summer and whose mother and boyfriend have been charged with child neglect.

Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams and State Attorney Angela Corey announced during a news conference Monday that the remains were found in a wooded area and that they believe they are those of 21-month-old Lonzie Barton.

Ebron could face new charges in Lonzie's death

Ebron child neglect trial postponed indefinitely; child's remains found in woods

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The discovery of human remains believed to be those of missing toddler Lonzie Barton could mean new charges against Ruben Ebron, the prime suspect in the boy's disappearance last July.

Ebron is already facing charges of child neglect, lying to police and tampering with evidence. That trial was slated to begin Monday but at the last minute Ebron waived his right to a speedy trial Monday morning, essentially postponing the trial indefinitely.

At the news conference Monday, State Attorney Angela Corey said new charges are being considered now that the remains had been found, but she declined to say how many or who they would be filed against.

'We have found this child': Lonzie Barton search ends after 172 days

What was expected to be the start of trial for Ruben Ebron, the man considered the chief suspect in the child’s July 24 disappearance, devolved in a flood of surprising developments Monday. First, just minutes before lawyers were set to begin jury selection in the high-profile trial, Ebron’s defense team sought a continuance, waiving his right to a speedy trial after weeks of declining to make that request. That decision pushed at least until next Tuesday any legal proceeding in the case.

    [...]

Finally, shortly after 4 p.m., JSO held a twice-delayed press conference at the search site, announcing they believed the human remains found were Lonzie’s. According to JSO Chief Tom Hackney, the face of the investigation from the beginning, Ebron had led police to the child’s body, which he said had been “disposed like a piece of trash.”

Owner of property where remains believed to be Lonzie Barton found speaks about investigation

"I don't know how he got to where the body was. He could've come in off the 9B property and just walk right in," said property owner Gary Morrison.

Morrison owns the property. He said the remains were found less than a hundred yards from the closest home.

"That's where he was found, was at the edge of the trash pile," Morrison said.

Morrison explained how the stench of remains could have gone unnoticed.

Bayard property owner: ‘I just can't believe it happened'

“We had a big, dead dog laying down there and that probably was the smell, because you could come out here and smell something, but then you looked over there and saw the dead dog and didn’t pay any attention to it.”

Morrison said the smell could have been that of the remains, but he doesn’t not know. He said there have been several people dumping trash on the property for years.

“I came out here to check, there was no trash. There's been several people dumping out here.

Father visits Ruben Ebron in jail
Vic Micolucci - Ethan Calloway January 18, 2016

Judge Mark Borello lifted the visitation restrictions last Monday, the same day police announced that Ebron had led them to a wooded area in Bayard where a child's remains were found.

    [...]

In the meantime, Ebron, who reported Lonzie missing in July, saw his father for the first time in months on Monday. William Ebron Sr. spend about two hours with his son at the jail, which is the maximum visitation time.

William Ebron told News4Jax that he has advised his son to be 100 percent truthful. The elder Ebron said this has gone on too long and the truth needs to come out so that everyone can get closure. He said he has not spoken to his son about the details of the case.

Ebron's contact remains restricted with Lonna Barton, Lonzie's mother, who was Ebron's girlfriend when the toddler disappeared last July.

No answers for weeks in Ruben Ebron prosecution
Remains hold key to possible new charges, experts say
By Vic Micolucci January 19, 2016

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Just over a week after police said the remains of toddler Lonzie Barton were likely found, a hearing in the Ruben Ebron case was postponed until Feb. 9.

Ebron, the man the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has long called the prime suspect in Lonzie's disappearance, is currently facing charges of child neglect, lying to police and tampering with evidence.

    [...]

Ebron's trial was slated to begin last week but he waived his right to a speedy trial as jury selection was about to begin, essentially postponing the trial indefinitely.

News4Jax was told a possible plea deal prompted Ebron to lead police to the remains in exchange for a 20-year sentence for aggravated manslaughter, but the trial judge didn't allow the hastily arranged agreement to go forward.

    [...]

"If he decided not to accept the plea and Ruben Ebron gave this information only on the conditions of a plea, then again the state attorney's office would not be able to legally use that information because Ruben Ebron has already gained his immunity by giving them information that is truthful," said Rhonda Peoples-Waters.
