Tamaqua man reported missing
A 29-year-old Tamaqua man has been reported missing.

Jesse Farber, also known as Jesse Rex, was last seen Tuesday afternoon.

Family members say the last contact from Farber was a cell phone call placed to his girlfriend in which he sounded frantic and needing help.

His last known location is believed to have been on South Mountain, or Sharp Mountain, behind Tamaqua Area High School.

Sounds like a pretty active search. Here is a map of the area, with the school, base camp and his possible destination marked. His family believes he might have been walking to his grandmother's house in New England Valley, while another article says the grandmother lives on Valley Road. https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=z2VLvG6QAl8U.k2m8msD-QxGs&usp=sharing

I wish they would give more details on the phone call he made to his girlfriend.

Police said his last phone call was to his girlfriend. They said he told her he was in a tree because he saw some coyotes and his phone battery was dying.

Something about this story seems a little fishy. I've never heard of someone that is an avid outdoorsman get treed by a pack of coyotes. Coyotes steer clear of humans, at the very least they would have simply run away from him, not chased him up a tree.

There's something else at play here.

While that is true in the West, in Pennsylvania, people react to coyotes differently. I grew up in NJ not far from this part of PA and have always been an avid camper, hiker, etc. It wasn't until the last 10-20 years, that coyotes have made a comeback in that part of the east. It is still pretty uncommon to hear them at night and even less likely to see any. A lot of people have an irrational fear of coyotes in the East.

ETA: My definition of "uncommon to hear them" is defined as out of the 100+ nights I've spent sleeping in a tent in the Poconos, I've heard coyotes in the area less than 5 times. I've only ever seen them on the east coast a handful of times in my 50+ years.

Well, "he was in a treehouse because he saw a pack of coyotes" isn't the same thing as being treed by a pack of coyotes, IMHO. People run from rattle snakes but it's not because they're being chased . . . I think it could well be true that he chose to climb a tree because he saw coyotes. I agree with you, coyotes wouldn't chase a grown man up a tree.

Partial part from the article:

"The ground was disturbed as if someone could have slipped," he said.
It's unclear if the hole is an abandoned mine shaft or a deep subsidence. One volunteer searcher who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the hole possibly could reach a depth of 500 feet at which point there's an undetermined depth of water.
Searcher Christine Ciardelli of Northeast Search and Rescue K 9 Division confirmed that search dogs were useful at that site and others.
"The dogs did pick up several scents of interest," she said.

Thanks StacyMarie, Some other bits of info from that article:

-The official search has been called off after three days. "Some rescuers with specialized equipment might return to further examine a deep hole."
-There are a lot of holes, mine shafts and "voids" in the area.
-One hole is of particular interest because of potential clues spotted around the opening.
-And sadly, Jesse is the father of two children.

ETA: The family is still searching an is looking for volunteers to help. https://www.facebook.com/SchuylkillCountyPoliceActivity

Family still searching for missing Tamaqua man

http://standardspeaker.com/news/family-still-searching-for-missing-tamaqua-man-1.1928293

Search called off but family still looking.

According to Fritz, Farber made a distressing call to the mother of his children just after 8 p.m. on Aug. 11. During the short call, he said that coyotes were chasing him and that he was scared, she said. He told the woman that he was in the woods behind the high school and that his cellphone battery was low.

“DEP sent someone to the search behind Tamaqua High School on Friday with a camera to look into an abandoned mine opening,” DEP spokeswoman Colleen Connolly said. “We got the camera down about 200-225 feet before it hit some rock, but we did not see anything.”

And weird, this came across my f.b. feed today from PA Missing page. This is NOT about Jesse but rather another missing young man that disappeared last year from Barnesville which is only 10 minutes from Tamaqua.

I'm in no way implying that the two are connected, I'm just surprised that there is so little information out there about this guy who's been missing for over a year, Seth Muskett.
