GUILTY CT - Athiyan Sivakumar, 19 mos, dies of head trauma, New Haven, 16 Jan 2014

An Indian woman employed as a babysitter for 19-month-old Athiyan Sivakumar in Connecticut has received a 14-year jail sentence after entering an Alford plea to murder charges over his death last January. Kinjal Patel, 29, will also have to serve five years' probation and will probably be deported after her release, New Haven Superior Court decided.

Police say Patel initially told them that while she was babysitting the boy he suffered a head injury after slipping on the floor. She later admitted she became angry and pushed him in the face, causing him to fall backward and strike his head.

Baby Athiyan's parents are also facing charges of risk of injury to a child and interfering with an officer because police say they initially lied about their son's injuries, saying he had fallen. They had also agreed not to use Patel as a babysitter when the Department of Children and Families had investigated an incident in December when baby Athiyan was taken to hospital with facial injuries. An investigation found Patel was babysitting that day too.

Patel's lawyer said she never intended to hurt Athiyan but was inexperienced with children.

Because it takes a heck of a lot of experience to know you are not supposed to shove a child in the face. :notgood:
