ME - Girl, 9, Mattawamkeag Wilderness Park, 28 Aug 2015

9-year-old missing from Mattawamkeag wilderness park
"Law enforcement personnel from the region are searching for a 9-year-old girl who went swimming Friday evening near Mattawamkeag Wilderness Campground and Park and is now missing, a Penobscot Regional Communications Center dispatcher confirmed late Friday.

“They’re out looking for a female who was swimming in the river,” the dispatcher said about 8:30 p.m..

The search for the girl began around 6:30 p.m. and includes a Maine Warden Service search plane, Mattawamkeag Fire Department and others, the dispatcher said."

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

Park Manager Carlton Norris said the girl, her parents and a younger sibling went swimming in Sleugundy Heater Gorge, which is located about 1.5 miles south of the town-owned camping area.============================================= ===========================

Trying to understand how she went missing.

I'm kind of confused as to how she "disappeared" in the water myself.

    This doesn't look good, unfortunately.

as a sleuther who lives in the same town as a state park with many mishaps (including many drownings .. not all fatal) ... this is very scary! There are only so many resources right off the bat IMO

I'm confused too. Was she in the water and went under, or do they not know if she was in the water?

    I agree. I don't see a happy ending.

When your two young kids are in the lake, I have to imagine that the parents are watching them very closely. Maybe she got out and walked over to a car to get a towel or something?

I think all kids under 15 should have a bungee cord ATTACHED to their parent/guardian/adult. So then we can just pull when we need then and vice versa. A momma can drean
Tragic. I hope she is found.
