A 43-year-old man in Doubleview, Perth was arrested just after midnight last night, suspected of dousing three young children with petrol and setting them alight. An off-duty police officer living in Holbeck Street came to their aid.

One of the children, a three-year-old girl, suffered extensive burns and is in a critical but stable condition at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH).

It is understood she had been lying in a cot at the time of the incident.

A seven-year-old girl who also suffered burns is in a stable condition in PMH.

Police said a six-year-old boy was with family.

He appeared in court this morning in what reporters are saying was a very 'bizarre and dramatic' scene. He's been charged with one count of aggravated grievous bodily harm and two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm and is remanded in custody.

Man was shirtless, held onto by police in the dock & went into an unresponsive, bizarre state. He's been remanded in custody. @perthnow 2/2 (https://twitter.com/KACampbell81/status/637522107321217024?s=17)

Three children burnt after fire attack in Doubleview home

Meanwhile, a hero resident has told PerthNow how he restrained the 43-year-old man.

“I ran into the house and put him in a choke hold until the cops arrived and soon enough he was out cold in a couple of seconds,” the man, who did not want to be named, said.

“The house was a complete mess.”

Good on that neighbour!

It's the little girl's 4th birthday on Monday :(

This is just horrendous :( I hadn't heard that it is her birthday tomorrow, how awful.

Has there been any mention of whether or not the attacker was related to the children in any way? It doesn't seem like it was a stranger in the house.

Neighbour who put him in a chokehold really was brave - the suspect was armed with a filleting knife.

I wonder if there have been previous incidents of violence or aggression, and if substance abuse is involved?

Heartbroken for that little girl. If she was laying down as stated, I'm guessing a large percentage of her body is burned. Hope she survives.

This is probably a horrible thing to say, but if she was very horribly burned all over, I wonder if she would be better off at the Rainbow Bridge with her waiting loved ones. I hate to think of the horrible pain and the endless surgeries and skin grafts she has to endure. It is so heartbreaking. Let alone her realizing that her DADDY set her on fire. UGH

The father, Edward John Herbert - known to neighbours as "Eddy" - made a brief appearance in the Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday charged with a string of serious offences...

A neighbour who rushed to the children's aid, said the drama began when the children's mother ran into the middle of Holbeck Street in Doubleview, crying out for help.

"She came out screaming. I went into the house and he came at me with a knife. I hit him with a fire extinguisher and knocked him down," the neighbour said.

Yesterday Mr Herbert’s distressed sister said he was a “loving father” who had a long-term mental illness.

“It’s the most horrific thing that could ever happen,” she said...

She said his daughter, who was last night [August 31st] in a critical but stable condition in Princess Margaret Hospital, was expected to survive...

The boy and his seven-year-old sister were not set alight but needed treatment after the fuel hurt their skin.

Relatives are caring for them.

A Crown Prosecutor told Perth Magistrates Court Herbert was "not fit" to attend his second court appearance, scheduled for today, after collapsing and being dragged from the dock during a bizarre court appearance on Saturday.

Herbert was shirtless and incoherent in court, where he reportedly hummed to himself before becoming unresponsive.

Charges against a father accused of dousing his children in petrol and setting one of them on fire while in her cot have been upgraded to attempted murder.

Edward John Herbert, from Perth, was originally charged with causing grievous bodily harm to his three-year-old and seven-year-old daughters at their Doubleview home in August...

It is alleged the three-year-old girl was set on fire whilst she was in her cot.

She suffered burns to upper body and face, whilst the seven-year-old also suffered burns.

The court heard a charge involving a third child would be discontinued.
