How body was found
Neighbor in townhouse complex said he heard gunshots over weekend
Another neighbor noticed her little black dog outside around 6 AM on Tuesday. He said the dog ran up to him, scratched his leg, and then ran back to apartment.
A 3rd neighbor saw a maintenance man banging loudly on Ramirez's front door around 7:40 AM on Tuesday
A 4th neighbor noticed both of her dogs outside, shortly before 8 AM Tuesday, running in and out of apartment, and saw Ramirez's back sliding glass door was open. That neighbor went to the door and called inside and got no response, so then called police.
Police responded and found her, dead from multiple gunshot wounds, with baby lying nearby, unharmed.

Info on victim
She was an information technology specialist, private first class in U.S. Army, stationed with Fort Meade's 742nd Military Intelligence Battalion in Maryland since April 2015
Prior to Fort Meade, she served for 9 months at Camp Humphries in South Korea.
She gave birth to her baby girl in April
She was married, but husband was not living with her.

The baby is now with Karlyn's family in Texas. Karlyn's murder is being investigated by Army Criminal Investigative Command at Fort Meade along with county police (Anne Arundel).

Any information/tips, please call Homicide Detective Jason McNemar at 410-222-4756
Anonymous tips can be phoned to the Anne Arundel County Police Tip Line 410-222-4700 or Metro Crime Stoppers.

My son is stationed at Fort Meade, and there's lots of apartments in the area.

I really think this young woman was killed by someone she knew -- I suspect her two dogs would not have let a stranger into the house. And, I think the murder most likely happened Monday night, even though the one neighbor said he heard shots over the weekend. The dogs being out and the door being open wasn't noticed until Tuesday morning, but several neighbors noticed it then, so I think it would have also been noticed on Monday. And if that baby had gone untended for over a day, she'd have been screaming - with the door open, the neighbors would have noticed. It's almost as if the door was purposefully left open, so the baby would be found quickly.

Looking at her facebook, can't figure out who the husband is. She must have gotten pregnant during her deployment, since that lasted 9 months. The man she (very discretely) indicated was the father is a senior officer. The relationship would have been against fraternization rules of Army.

My DH went to Ft Meade HS. That area is pretty bad. Could have been a random robbery or sexual assault. Though her personal life seems to have been complex.

It's possible that it was random, but nothing said in media about sexual assault or robbery. There's been some speculation in some of the comments under the media articles that because she worked in Army intelligence, she may have been a target of ISIS or something like that. I also find that unlikely. Probably something to do with complex personal life.

I grew up by Ft Meade. You have some good places, some bad places, within a 5 mile radius of Ft Meade....just like any suburban area, just like any area outside of a military base.
The area around Millstone Ct isn't high crime. You do have random petty crime. My best friend is a teacher at Meade High School and it's not as crime-ridden as it's made out to be.
You do have the bad parts of this area feeding into that school though. A few miles away is the Pioneer City area, and there tends to be quite a bit of crime there. Not murder after murder, per se....but petty crime and a lot of robberies. I have told many friends not to buy homes in that area, but the Millstone area feeds into the provinces and I know a lot of people in that area who have no issues with crime. This seems targeted IMO.

ETA to add two things:
1. I still live in the area, about 7-8 miles from where this happened. My area is not a bad area, very few crimes. Sometimes I forget to lock my car.
2. There's a casino about 2 miles from here, and the crime rate HAS increased since the casino opened.

Funeral services will be held Thursday in Texas for a young mother and Army soldier killed in her home last month.

Karlyn Serane Ramirez, 24, was found shot to death in her Severn home Aug. 25, with her 5-month-old daughter unharmed beside her.

Ramirez’ obituary through Sunset Memorial Oaks Funeral Home named the girl, Kattaleya Vale Kearny. Police found Ramirez’ body after a neighbor reported the door to her home open in the 8000 block of Millstone Court.

She got married, had her only child, and died...all in less than 8 months. Sad.

Strange...she had no photos of her wedding or husband on her FB page...he wasn't even a FB friend at the time she was killed.

Her husband - Maliek Kearney (which means "king" in Arabic - hence, his nickname) is a senior NCO - E8. Karlyn's rank was E3. The Army revised their fraternization policy last year -- now a dating relationship between an NCO and a specialist is explicitly forbidden. That policy went into effect on Nov. 6, 2014 (and by that time, Karlyn would have been pregnant).

This article discusses the fraternization policy a bit. In a scenario where 2 enlisted personnel were dating, and then one got promoted to corporal, they would have one year to "resolve" the relationship by either breaking up, or getting married. http://www.ftmeadesoundoff.com/news/12425/army-updates-fraternization-policy/

However, the article doesn't discuss what would happen if an officer of long standing got an enlisted soldier pregnant while they were both on deployment in S. Korea. I'm guessing that maybe pressure was put on Sgt Kearney to fix things quickly by marrying Pvt Ramirez.

This 2nd article discusses one way that the Army is shrinking (they must be reduced by 30,000 soldiers in a little over a year from now), and that is by giving serious consideration of "involuntary separation" to staff sergeants over the rank of E6 who have a black mark on their record -- "when their moral or ethical conduct is deemed incompatible with the values of the NCO corps and the Army ethic." http://archive.armytimes.com/articl...-expands-involuntary-separations-problem-NCOs

Well, based on a new photo on his FB, she gave birth, got married (after the birth), and was murdered...in 4 months time.

Been thinking...if this was a random home invasion...why was nothing said about her door or window being broken into? And...as a soldier, and a martial arts champion, and a woman who could handle a gun and likely had one in her house...wouldn't she have been able to defend herself against an intruder? Sounds to me like she let someone she knew into her house.

She is married according to info in the first post.

Local law enforcement and Army investigators continue to seek answers in the shooting death of a 24-year-old private first class stationed at Fort Meade, Maryland, who was found last week with multiple gunshot wounds beside her unharmed 5-month-old daughter.
[...]
Investigators have interviewed multiple individuals, including Ramirez's husband on multiple occasions, but have not identified any suspects, department spokesman Lt. Ryan Frashure said Tuesday.

Nothing really new in this article.

It is so frustrating that nothing is being said about this case. I hope the investigators busy following up on some concrete leads.

I hope that's the case. Maybe if they're dealing with the Army and another MI soldier they have to keep it quiet. It makes me sad and angry how she seems to be forgotten.

I also think the Army angle is why we are not seeing any information. All the cases I have followed, of individuals in the military, very few details are released until such time as they make an arrest & then the trial.

This isn't much, but at least it's something.

From December 6:

No arrest in the murder of Army Pfc. Karlyn Ramirez, public’s help still needed

"We have spoken to her husband. We've conducted interviews with her husband. We're still investigating any leads that we have with the husband and family members.”

The Army’s Criminal Investigation Command as well as the Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Department are still looking for leads in the murder. Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s department is asking anyone with information contact the Homicide Unit at 410-222-4756 or 410-222-4700; case number 2015-732055. Callers may remain anonymous. Even small pieces of information could be helpful in solving the case. If there are suspects in this shooting, both the Army and local law enforcement are staying mum.
