Anyone got anything good to say about anything with regard to this? I've heard of hundreds of people doing good things - no one wants to talk about that though. Right?

I posted a thread about the hero's who are coming out of this. I don't think anyone is interested though.

My son-In-Law works for BP...a large UK corp. that absorbed Amoco Oil. The following is a press release, but let me tell you this, BP has gone above & beyond what is printed in this article. Right after this happened, Paul (SIL), who lives in Vancleave, Ms., took his kids to Florida to stay with friends who still had electricity and phone service. After he dropped them off, he loaded up the van at a Wal Mart there in Fla. with bottled water, soap, canned food, diapers and anything else he thought folks would need. The next morning, his boss and several others from BP drove to Biloxi in three trucks and distributed everything from the van along with several electric generators, medical kits, clothing, and cans of gas siphoned from their own trucks for the generators. BP is continuing to help by encouraging their employees to volunteer for the Red Cross and other relief organizations without fear of losing their jobs. I’m proud that my son-in-law works for a company that is doing so much.

The original press release:

BP Foundation contributes $1 million to Hurricane Katrina relief effort
Release date: 30 August 2005
Houston, TX, August 30, 2005: In response to the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina on communities in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, BP announced that the BP Foundation has donated $1million to the Red Cross and will also match the contributions of BP employees to the disaster relief effort.
The BP Foundation donation will be dedicated as follows:

* $500,000 for Louisiana
* $250,000 for Mississippi
* $100,000 for Alabama
* $150,000 at the discretion of the Red Cross

BP will also conduct an employee appeal inviting BP employees in the US to assist the Red Cross in responding to Hurricane Katrina. The BP Foundation will match employee contributions on a one-to-one basis.

BP is an international company involved in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas; refining, marketing, supply and transportation of hydrocarbons; and manufacturing and marketing of petrochemicals, and solar and gas-fired power generation. BP has significant operations in the Gulf of Mexico and the affected states.

Aid given out so far: $600M
Here's an early look at what kind of financial relief evacuees will be able to access.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) – More than $60 billion in federal government aid and more than half a billion dollars to the Red Cross alone have been earmarked to date for relief to those from the areas ravaged by Hurricane Katrina.

That doesn't include the money donated to other charities and relief funds.

A large part of these funds collectively will go to rebuilding infrastructure and clearing out flooded areas. But a good portion will be earmarked for individuals in need of assistance, in the form of cash, food, housing and other essentials.

As of Friday afternoon, FEMA had given out nearly $590 million to 293,000 households as part of its $2,000-per-family emergency cash assistance program, said spokesman Michael Widomski. To date, more than 400,000 families have registered with FEMA, and more are expected to do so. Once a family registers, Widomski said, it should take between 12 and 24 hours for FEMA to issue them the money.

* * *

The Red Cross, meanwhile, has been giving evacuees debit cards worth between $360 to just over $1,500 depending on family size. As of Friday afternoon, it had given out an estimated 12,000 cards, though a total estimate of the dollar amount is not yet available, said spokeswoman Amanda Mark.

* * *

Direct cash assistance, however, is a small piece of the aid pie. The Red Cross, for instance, has been sheltering 160,000 Katrina victims in 23 states and has provided 6 million hot meals and an equal number of snacks in the wake of the hurricane.

* * *

But there will be a number of outlets from which they may seek longer term assistance:

FEMA: The federal emergency management agency can provide rental assistance for up to 18 months, said FEMA spokesman Mark Pfeifle. The agency also works with the Small Business Administration to provide disaster victims with low-interest loans. And if an evacuee is out of work but doesn't qualify for regular unemployment compensation – such as a farmer, independent consultant or small business owner – the agency works with the Department of Labor to provide special emergency unemployment compensation, Pfeifle said.

* * *

The Salvation Army, for instance, which has raised $66 million so far, is estimating there will be a minimum of 24 months of work ahead in helping those displaced by the hurricane, said Major George Hood, the organization's national spokesman.

That help could come in many forms: rental assistance, job retraining and counseling among others. The organization's advisers are meeting daily to assess what the longer term needs of the displaced are likely to be.

Here in the L.A. area all these supplies have set on pallets with no one to transport them.......it was so discouraging! The supplies are now finally on their way, just hope they get distributed :confused:

KNBC-TV

LOS ANGELES - Drivers for Wal-Mart and independent truckers on Friday voluntarily hauled food, water and medical supplies donated by community members to Louisiana to aid Hurricane Katrina victims.

SNIP:

Marketing consultant Sidney Ray jump-started the donating frenzy when she made an Internet posting to craigslist.org about organizing a relief campaign shortly after the hurricane hit.

But trucks offered early on for the effort never materialized, said organizer Steven Webb. The supplies lined both sides of the street.

SNIP:

Trucker Remains Stranded Near Gulfport

A trucker who volunteered to carry supplies to hurricane-ravaged communities has been stranded for nearly one week in Mississippi.

SNIP:

Jacbos left Sept. 2 with a semitrailer load of bottled water. When the truck reached its destination Sunday, FEMA officials told Jacobs to wait in a long line with other truckers.

Jacobs told Lopez that he has been given one meal per day. He said the bottled water remains on the truck.

"My drivers so wanted to help that they just wanted to get there as fast as possible," said Donna Nickell, of American Nickell Carrier. "He's just been sitting there since Sunday, knowing that he's got all this water to help these victims."

Company officials said only FEMA officials are allowed to open the semitrailer and distribute the water.

Well I tried to start a thread with a positive title and pointing out some positive things and nearly got chewed up for it. So I would love it if others who are braver then I would like to start some postive threads. As I feel the Human Race has a lot to be proud of with all the heros and donaters and out oupouring of help that has occured. No matter how many mistakes are made I am still proud that we are a species that try to do right in the first place. Imagine if we had no FEMA office at all, or no first responders or no goveners or mayors ?

mjak

A postive story I read was the Story of Former vice president Gore, Hired and arranged for two planes himself to help evacuate a hospital after receiving a call for help from a doctor there.
Lets here it for Gore!!!

Cool Gabby! Some of these big corporations blow my mind with what they are doing, and THEY'RE NOT DONE YET! They just keep on-and-on trying to help! I really think there's a future for our species after all!

Town Improvises to Absorb Evacuees

By T.R. Reid
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, September 9, 2005; Page A16

ORANGE, Tex. -- Anna Rose Williams had never heard of Orange, Tex., when her tired, frightened family stopped here for dinner last week on their harried journey to escape Hurricane Katrina.

"We was seven people in one car, with the babies," the 61-year-old grandmother recalled. "A gentleman come out of the Domino Pizza and said, 'Do y'all need a place to stay?' I said, 'Honey, we don't need no place to stay. We need a place to live.' "

And that's how the Williams family of Burns Street in New Orleans became residents of Orange -- for the time being, at least. Their current home is the former fourth-grade classroom at the Community Church Youth Center in Orange, a bayou town on the Texas-Louisiana border that has seen its population swell from more than 18,000 to about 20,000 in one week as evacuees have moved in.

----

"These people were getting off the buses wearing garbage bags and no shoes," Frey said. "So we started calling people and saying, 'We need footwear. We need bedding. We need two dozen Porta Potties out here quick.' " Virtually overnight, the state welcome center was transformed into an outdoor warehouse, with mountains of donated clothing, diapers, sleeping bags, food and an eight-foot tower of water bottles.

With few or no job prospects in devastated New Orleans, some of Orange's newest residents have been looking for work -- and finding it. One pastor reopened a defunct carwash to provide employment. A local maker of precision tools, Cloeren Co., sent fliers to motels and shelters looking for machinists. "We're going to hire a bunch of people," said Kenneth Cormier, Cloeren's director of human resources.

---
Anna Rose Williams is one of those likely to stay. "We don't know if there's anything to go back to," she said. "And I think it must have been God that steered me to this wonderful community. We might just make this place our home."
