Many THANKS to the crew who got everyone out safely. They earned every single penny of their paychecks today! I'm sure we'll hear stories of passengers helping each other too.

Very scary to see all that smoke.

I wonder what happened. They were going to take off. Eeeeeee

Wow, thank goodness is wasn't close to full passenger capacity! Kudos to the crew.

Thankful that nobody perished , and no one seriously injured !
I was thinking some mechanical failure that led to the fire ?

It looks like the smoke is from the underside of the plane in front of the wings. What's there?

The aviation expert on CNN (a 777 pilot) theorized that the main landing gear caught fire as a result of the rejected take-off at max take-off weight. The brakes get very hot and the rubber tires can catch fire.

Here is a twitter feed from one of the passengers on the plane

He says the pilot told him there was a catastrophic engine failure which suggests an un-contained engine failure.

Also I note from the picture many passengers carrying luggage. I don't know what is wrong with people.

Very frightening thank goodness they were not in the air.

Its baffling isn't it the plane could explode and your life is in danger but you take your time getting your hand luggage from the overhead compartment which is not allowed to go down the emergency slide with you. I'm surprised British Airways staff allowed them to take the hand luggage with them but they did a fantastic job of keeping everyone safe regardless. Thank goodness the plane wasnt in the air or we could be discussing an absolute tragedy.

^ If in fact the fire was the result of a catastrophic engine failure (as opposed to overheated brakes) they are very lucky that the aircraft did not get airborne as this would have ended up like the Concorde crash in Paris.

That was my very first thought when I read the headline. They were so very lucky.

A couple of my friends who are flight attendants posted on FB chastising the people who took their time to get the carry on's out of the overhead bins. What if their time doing that delayed another passenger or a crew member (they are required to exit last) from exiting safely? Luckily no one was seriously hurt or killed, but jeeze folks! Even when a flight lands safely, it is a jumble when people remove their carry on's. Your bag is replaceable, people are not!

Here are a couple of links to the plane fire.

A British Airways jet has caught fire at Las Vegas airport, sending smoke billowing into the air, after suffering what the pilot described as a “catastrophic failure” of the left engine.

British Airways fire: 'We saw the smoke. The smell was bitter. It was time to panic'

Hopefully we should have answers before long on why the engine caught fire. Since all the parts of the plane are together, it would seem to be easier for the investigators to examine the engine. They would also be able to access the black boxes for further data.

:waitasec: Why were passengers taking time to reach into overhead bins to retrieve hand luggage during the emergency evacuation? Don't safety instruction cards indicate that passengers should not take anything with them during an evacuation? Yet many of the passengers came down the inflated chutes with roller bags and other hand baggage. Wouldn't flight attendants have advised passengers to exit as quickly as possible and WITHOUT luggage? What if the entire plane had been on fire or exploded during the evacuation process?

If I had been on that plane, my hand luggage would have been the last thing that I'd consider when my life was in danger!
