"Women at the University of Toronto are on high alert after someone made violent online threats about shooting feminists on campus.

The University of Toronto warned its students, faculty and staff about the threats on Thursday and said it's working with the Toronto Police Service and Peel Regional Police to find out who is behind the anonymous threats, made by someone using the screen name "KillFeminists." Meanwhile, campus enforcement have increased their patrols, the university said.

"We take these threats very seriously and want to ensure that we have a safe campus community," U of T said in its memo.

Toronto police confirmed they're aware of the anonymous threats, which were made several days ago, and have assigned a detective to the case."

“The feminists who act rude to you at the University of Toronto should be shot to death and the remaining survivors tied to a tree with their throats slit with a dull knife,” reads one, which goes on to suggest killing women and professors in the sociology and women’s studies departments.

“Walk into the classroom and fire a bullet in the feminist professor’s head and proceed to spray bullets all over the classroom until all the slutty women are killed,” reads another.

Blackburn-Evans said security would be appropriately adjusted in both departments mentioned in the posts, but wouldn’t go into specifics.

“Those departments, yes, the police presence is taking that into account, obviously.”
 
Wish there was more info. about what would merit, or be considered " suspicious behavior" and what actions to take, or not take - in a potentially violent situation. How would one spot such a person, is it better to run, or hide ect ? imo.

A student who spoke to CBC's Linda Ward on Friday morning says she was aware of the threats and was concerned.

"I do feel like I have to be more cautious," she said. "I'm listening to my music right now, maybe that's something I should stop. It's my first time living away from home."

"I have to take it seriously," said Marianna Reis. "It's not like there haven't been things in my own lifetime that have made me be fearful," she added, referencing the 2014 shooting at UC Santa Barbara that left six people dead.

"There are examples of this kind of violence being enacted against women on campuses," Reis said.

Anyone who spots suspicious activity on campus was urged to contact campus police."

" Toronto police say “no credible threats have been identified” after alarming comments were posted online about female faculty members and students at the University of Toronto.

The comments, which the university confirms were of a threatening nature, were posted in an anonymous online article on Sept. 5, police say.

Officials have provided few details about what was written however a release issued by CUPE Local 3902 – which represents academic staff – said that the threats were made “specifically toward women and feminists” and encouraged violence against those working in sociology and women’s studies classrooms.

As a precaution, the university has stepped up security at all three campuses".

Locking and barricading the door
Turning off the lights or maintaining minimal lighting
Closing all windows and blinds.
Lie flat on the floor or take adequate cover out of sight, keep back from windows and doors.
Turn off cell phones unless you need to report injured people.
Stay in the room until police arrive and before you can be safely evacuated".

FBI tipped off Wilfrid Laurier University about online threat"

"It's my understanding that information coming from the FBI was more of a heads up in that, 'Here is a posting we are aware of, you need to be aware of this,'" said Deitrich.

The FBI was concerned because of the recent college shooting in Oregon, where a similar threat had been posted online to the anonymous 4chan forum.

"These are very complex investigations," Dietrich responded when asked if police think they will be able to find the person or persons responsible."

"Ransem said he didn’t realize authorities took those kinds of posts as real threats.

“I was ignorant of certain realities such as being that there was a level of paranoia across the pond that I wasn’t knowing about,” he said.

“I knew there was a lot of shootings but I didn’t know the paranoia was such that I was going to be arrested in this country. As soon as I was identified as being in another country, I’m not sure how I would be considered a credible threat.”

He said it was “a dumb decision” and he thought he was protected by freedom of speech legislation.

“From the bottom of my heart, I am very, very sorry. I did not mean for the university to be shut down. I’m not a bad man, 10 minutes with me and you’ll realize I’m as dangerous as a doormouse.”
