A 37-year-old mother of two in Hemel Hempstead, UK, has been found stabbed to death in her home, over an hour after police received the first of two emergency calls from her street.

The first call came in around 10.30pm Monday, about a man acting suspiciously. Around an hour later, a second call came in from someone in the street reporting a burglary. When police checked that resident's next-door neighbor, they found the 37-year-old occupant inside had been stabbed to death. She has a husband and two children but it's not stated if they were in the home at the time.

Two men aged 25 and 19 have been arrested and Hertfordshire police have referred the incident to the police complaints commission which will investigate if anything went wrong with the investigation.

Uh oh. Police spoke to the suspect after the first call. Then went away and Nicola Cross was murdered while her two kids slept in the home and her husband was at work.

A woman was stabbed to death in her home an hour after police had been alerted to reports of a man acting suspiciously in her street, it has emerged.

She has been named locally as Nicola Cross, 37, who was attacked at the family home in Hemel Hempstead on Monday while her two children were said to have been asleep in bed and her husband was at work.

I wonder if they tried to steal her husband's Mercedes and went inside to force her to hand over the keys? The car was taken away by police, the article linked above says.

Nicola did not know her killer.

It's really hard to understand the mentality of these suspects - seems police came out, questioned one and then let him go but rather than fleeing the suspects hung around...

burgled one house
went next door and murdered Nicola WHILE police were investigating the burglary

wth? Or am I misunderstanding the timeline/events? Seems unbelievable.

What a horrid story. She must have been terrified when she realized they were coming in and she was completely defenseless, along with her children. At that point she likely knew the police weren't going to come and save her.

Is there a reason they have not posted pics of the suspects? Does the UK only post pics AFTER a conviction?

They're terraced (row) houses that don't look very easy to break into. Maybe the back doors are vulnerable.

Still think these suspects were incredibly brazen, and determined.

A 25-year-old man has been charged with Nicola's murder, kidnap (??) and burglary. A 19-year-old arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to burgle has been bailed. Nicola's children are in the care of family.

Marcin Porczynski, 25, also from Hemel Hempstead, has been charged with murder, two counts of kidnap and a burglary at a neighbouring property, Hertfordshire constabulary said.

ETA: Was this some kind of crazy kidnap for ransom attempt and not just a burglary gone wrong? Like that one that a couple of guys tried with singer Joss Stone in Devon, England?

A man has been charged with murdering a mother-of-two in her own home, then trying to kidnap her two young children.

Officers arrested Porczynski in the garden with the two children around the same time the body was found, according to police sources.

Porczynski was charged with murder, two counts of kidnap and a burglary on Wednesday afternoon, and will appear in court on Thursday.

This is such a similar crime to the Terry & Hailey Dunbar Blanchette murder/kidnap in Canada. Stabbed the parent to death and tried to kidnap the children. Same day as well. How awful but at least these children, a boy aged six and a girl aged three, are safe and with family.

I applaud the way the UK justice system goes to trial so efficiently. Even though this horrible crime happened on the same day as the Blanchette murder in Canada, the Canadian case will go to trial long after half the witnesses have died, moved away, or forgotten all the details. How did the Canadian justice system stray so far off the tracks.

Hertfordshire Police has admitted officers spoke to Porczynski an hour before Mrs Cross's death after receiving reports of a man acting suspiciously, but they let him go.

Police were called back to the street an hour later to investigate reports a man was trespassing into a neighbouring home.

It was while they were probing this that officers discovered Mrs Cross, who lived next door, had been stabbed. She was later pronounced dead.

A man has admitted killing a woman whose last words and screams were heard over the phone by her husband. Marcin Porczynski broke into Nicola Cross's home in Hemel Hempstead and attacked her with a knife shortly after she called 999 because she was alarmed by him banging on several doors. Her husband was on the phone to her when she was stabbed and told the court he still hears her screams and pleas.

He admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and will be sentenced on Monday. He has been kept at secure facility Rampton Hospital since his arrest.

A man sent to a secure hospital for killing a mother of two told doctors he had to sacrifice her to save his own family...

The court heard he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia at the time of the attack and had been hearing voices for up to two years before the killing...

Judge Andrew Bright QC ordered that Porczynski should be detained at Rampton Secure Hospital in Nottinghamshire under a hospital order with a restriction without limit of time.
