KEWOOD - Lakewood Police arrested Roman Paul Morales on Tuesday in connection with the death of a 2-year-old boy found unresponsive in a Lakewood apartment Monday.

The 21-year-old is in custody for suspicion of first-degree murder. He will appear in court Wednesday morning.

Lakewood Police say they received a call saying the boy had been missing shortly before noon on Monday.

The family tells 9NEWS the victim, 2-year-old Donnie Ro'Mello Romero, would've turned three in a week. They also say the suspect is Donny's cousin on his mother's side.

Neighbors told 9NEWS on Monday that about 20 minutes before he was found, Donnie's family had been knocking on doors around the apartment complex looking for him.

They later found Donnie in the 2500 block of South Sheridan Boulevard.

Donnie was unconscious and rushed to the hospital.

He was pronounced dead at around 2 p.m. His mother and at least two other adults were also inside when Donny was found.

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) – Police in Lakewood hope video cameras at an apartment complex will help them get a better picture of how a toddler was killed Monday.
Two-year-old Donnie Ro’mello Romero was found dead in a closed container with a cord wrapped around his neck in the apartment where the boy lived. Roman Paul Isaiah Morales, 21, has been arrested in connection with the boy’s death. He’s facing charges of first-degree murder and is due to appear in court on Wednesday.

"They think he did have something wrapped around his neck," Lakewood Police Department spokesperson Steve Davis said.

"They wrapped a cord around my son's neck," said Donny Romero, the victim's father. "Put him in a tote, put a blanket over it and then closed it with the lid. We have no explanation why anything happened."

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Friends and family of 2-year-old Donny “Ro Mello” Romero gathered at a vigil to remember him Tuesday night. Hundreds showed up and gathered outside the apartment where police said he was killed Monday.

Earlier, the boy’s father talked with FOX31 Denver for an exclusive interview.

“I want tonight to be about a prayer for life, a life taken too soon,” Donnie Romero Sr. said. “I hadn't seen him since September first. There are so many clues police must work through to determine what happened and whether (suspect Roman Morales) is a fall guy.”

[...]

The call about the missing boy came just before 12 p.m. Monday afternoon from an apartment in the 2500 block of South Sheridan Boulevard, Davis said. That address is north of 285 and west of Federal Blvd.

The caller indicated that the 2-year-old boy, Donny Ro'Mello Romero, had been missing for about 10 minutes.

Police and family members began searching the area. Officers also conducted a thorough search of the apartment. Within a few minutes the injured boy was found inside in another area of the apartment.

The child was unconscious and immediately transported to a hospital in very critical condition. Just before 2 p.m., the child was pronounced dead by medical staff, Davis said.

Additional information is provided by 9News, which cites court records divulging that Segura and Donnie Sr. dated for five years before their relationship deteriorated into acrimony. Segura is said to have accused Donnie Sr. of “controlling behavior and sexual assault” and “filed multiple complaints and requests for a protection order.” The cases were ultimately dismissed, the station maintains.

Then, last month, Donnie Sr. made a complaint of his own, requesting a protection order for Segura and a family member who allegedly was “using drugs and sexually abusing the toddler,” 9News allows.

RIP Donnie. We truly do have monsters walking amongst us

Lakewood Police say the suspect was one of the several people inside the apartment at the time of the toddler's death but had left the apartment with another man before police arrived.

Police searched for Morales and were able to find him 30 minutes later. They took him into custody after hours of questioning

So there were quite a few people there... I wonder what evidence LE have that Roman Paul Morales was the culprit.

:sigh:I guess little Ro Mello made too much noise or whined or cried too loudly or spilled a glass of milk or something horrible like that and someone beat him or shook him or strangled him just a bit too much.

Another perfect little angel flies up and away from this imperfect world. These stories are legion. And as we say, or think, "What is wrong with people?"

Dammit.

:justice:

Court documents allege that a family member who was recently released from jail -- and who relatives told police was acting strange and paranoid -- was asked to watch 2-year-old Donny Ro'Mello Romero before the toddler was killed...

Court records indicate family members told police Morales had previously used meth, but weren't sure if he was using anything at the time of the child's death.

According to the arrest affidavit obtained by 9NEWS, Morales told his mother, "I was told do to what I did."

The arrest affidavit for Roman Morales claims he admitted killing his young cousin last month while he was watching over him.

Morales had recently been released from jail and had a ankle monitoring bracelet at the time....

Others told investigators Morales had started acting strangely after a friend was murdered three years ago, he was depressed and began cutting himself, he believed the FBI and mob were after him and that horns were beeping in codes.

Family members are quoted as describing Morales as a meth user whose actions had grown distinctly paranoid. He allegedly claimed that "the mob and the FBI were following him" and had bugged his phone, leading him to conclude that "everyone in the house was going to die."

He also cut out photos of his grandfather, who he believed to have been in the mafia, under the theory that they "mean something in code" and thought diamond shapes in the carpeting "are symbols of a cult," the report maintains...

Discussions had taken place among his loved ones about taking Morales to the hospital and seeking help for his problems.

Yet, on the morning of the 21st, the affidavit says his mother asked him to watch Donnie while she and her sister — the boy's mother, Tiffany Segura — took the latter's older kids to school.
