A woman who alleged last month that she had been raped by Chicago Blackhawks NHL forward Patrick Kane has been publically dropped by her lawyer.

Kane has not been charged in the case but the 20-something woman alleges she was raped by Kane at his mansion outside Buffalo, New York, August 2 after meeting at a nightclub. Kane, who is due to sign an $84 million contract extension soon, strongly denies the allegations.

Tuesday, the woman's lawyer, Thomas Eoannou went public with the suggestion that evidence had been tampered with and the original evidence bag had just been found, empty, on the victim's mother's doorstep.

In a hastily called press conference late last night, Eoannou told media he was dropping his client because he no longer had confidence in the truth of the story of how the evidence bag was obtained. He maintains the bag is genuine though.

Erie County Da Eric Sidita has called a press conference for 11am today (Friday) to address the evidence-tampering allegations.

It's a bizarre hoax," Sedita said. "And it's a dog and pony show."

The DA set out clearly why he's certain the evidence tampering is a hoax by the mother of the victim, in what he says is an 'immoral' act but not an illegal one. Investigations revealed she was handed an empty evidence bag at the hospital after staff were told her daughter had changed the top she wore during the attack. But the bag was never used as the top was later collected by an officer who put it in his own evidence bag.

Surveillance video from the police department clearly shows the evidence box (evidence is not stored in bags) being placed in storage and the DA says it is still there. He says the possibility of the case going before a grand jury is not certain.

The victim's mother denies ever taking possession of the bag at the hospital and did not respond to media requests for comment. A family statement said there's no evidence the victim knew her mom was given the bag.
