Authorities Release Description of Toddler Found Dead on Deer Island
BOSTON, June 26, 2015—Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley, State Police Colonel Timothy Alben, and Winthrop Police Chief Terence Delehanty today released a physical description of the young girl whose body was found on Deer Island yesterday.

After a physical examination by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, investigators believe the girl was about 4 years old with brown eyes and brown hair that was about 14 inches long. She stood about 3˝ feet tall, and weighed just over 30 pounds. She was not significantly overweight or underweight for her height. Her ethnicity has not been established.

Neither the cause nor the manner of the girl’s death has yet been determined. Pathologists will undertake additional specialized testing before attempting to make those findings.

The investigation into the circumstances of the girl’s death and how her body came to be on the western shoreline of Deer Island, where it was discovered by a dog walker early yesterday afternoon, remains active, as do efforts to link her case with existing reports of missing children.

Perhaps most valuable, authorities said, will be assistance from members of the public who notice that a child meeting this description has gone missing from their community. Anyone aware of such a missing child may call the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit at 617-727-8817 or Winthrop Police at 617-539-5806.

Nicole Oliverio, 7News WHDH, Jul 04, '15 10:56 am edt
reports from Deer Park Island last night

[...State Police SM said Friday night they]

"had gotten several tips suggesting the body may be that of a missing girl from West Virginia who disappeared in September 2011.

[... the blanket she was wrapped in]

"may have been special to the child. They ask that anyone who may have known a child who had such a blanket to contact authorities."

    [...]

"The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children has been contacted...

Officials expressed concern about the girl's caretakers and if they have other children in the home. They said it is important to locate that family to make sure other potential children do not come into harm's way. "

Tips pour in about girl found dead on Deer Island
Nancy Chen, reports, NBC 7NEWS, Jul 04, '15 10:58 pm edt
    reports

    [...]

"The important thing I think is the clothing articles and the blanket there because they're very unique and someone's going to remember this and this child wearing that particular clothing,"

State Police Superintendent Col. Timothy Alben said, and that

"A computer-generated image of the girl has been viewed more than 24 million times online."

    [...]

"Tips have been pouring in" Nicole Oliverio, reports, who also spoke (this morning), with a Deer Island worker, whose colleague are placing a bench and tree, with funds they're raising because,

"She came to Deer Island for a reason and we want to try to honor her."

Criminologist on girl washed ashore on Deer Island: 'She was probably killed by a family member'
    Bob Ward, FOX25, Jul 04, 15 1:47 pm edt,
speaks with Jack Levin, Northeastern University Criminologist, who makes the point,

"Chances are this was an intimate murder,"

    [...]

"I think its a very interesting idea that this little girl had been cared for. There were at least mixed feelings on the part of the killer," he said. "There seems to be some kind of feeling for this little girl, and that also indicates, she was probably killed by a family member."

    [...]

The printer who produced the life-like posters of the girl's photo, Johnson Reprographics of Boston, is refusing to take any money for the job. So many others are offering to pay to have the child buried.

    [...]

    "any information...

call Mass. State Police at (508)821-2121

    ...Winthrop Police at 617-539-5806."

Reiterating: "Conley said investigators do not know if the girl washed ashore or was dumped on the Winthrop beach, nor has a cause of death been established.

"We are awaiting toxicology reports to determine if she may have ingested illegal drugs or was poisoned," Conley said."

Many on social media suggested the girl could be Maggie Sophia Ortega-Brown, but Massachusetts State Police said Tuesday that Maggie is alive and well in another country.
Conley said investigators do not know if the girl washed ashore or was dumped on the Winthrop beach, nor has a cause of death been established.

Can this computer generated image of a ‘Baby Doe’ lead investigators to her identity?
By Elahe Izadi, The Washington Post, July 8m 3:19 PM

    [...]

"They also have no idea how she died. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children created the composite image, which police shared on Facebook last week"

[... Bob Lowery, VP, of Missing Children Division]

"called composites “vitally important” since photos like those of the dead child are “not appropriate” to share with the public. “But it’s the public we need to engage with, to look at this child, because that’s how we’re going to get her identified.”"

[... according to Suffolk District Attorney, Daniel F. Conley]

"She was found in a large trash bag on Deer Island and Conley told the Globe that police believe she had only been dead a short time before she was discovered."

    [... he said]

"If any local police department had taken a report on her by now, I think we would know,"

    [... Conley states]

"authorities are awaiting the results of toxicology tests to determine if the girl was poisoned or ingested drugs."

    [...]

"Please step forward, clear your conscience and help us identify this young child."

    [... LE]

    "continue our request for leads,"

    [...]

"We need people to continue to look at her and think about her and let us know if anything in their memory clicks."
