An eastern Pennsylvania man must stand trial on charges he beat and forcibly removed the teeth of his girlfriend’s 4-year-old autistic son while baby-sitting...

[His defense attorney] has called the child’s injuries “an unfortunate accident” caused when the boy fell and hit a bedside table...

Kernechel was arrested last month after an investigation that began in July. That’s when the child’s mother brought the boy to Upper Perkiomen police with “severe” facial injuries and three missing teeth.

After the alleged beating, Kernechel left the boy in his bed, bleeding and crying, and did not tell the boy’s mother about the injuries when she returned home in the early morning hours of July 19, the DA said.

The boy’s mother found the boy the next morning asleep on the floor, lying on a pile of dried blood, according to the DA...

The investigation determined that the boy had suffered additional injuries dating all the way back to April 2015, including bite marks and other injuries, the DA said. The boy said that Kernechel was the one responsible.

“The teeth were recovered, they were intact from the root to the edge of the tooth,” says Ferman. “They were bloodied. And they have striations on them that would indicate that a tool of some sort was used to remove them from the child’s mouth.”
