"A passenger plane carrying 10 people including three children has gone missing in Indonesia.

The country's Aviastar airline said contact had been lost with the Twin Otter aircraft travelling between Masamba and Makassar, in the South Sulawesi province, on Friday afternoon.

The plane lost radio contact around 11 minutes after taking off in good weather at 14.25pm, Transportation Ministry spokesman Julius Barata said."

The Twin Otter aircraft, owned by the Indonesian domestic airline Aviastar, lost contact soon after taking off from the Masamba airport, officials said.

The plane was heading to the provincial capital Makassar with three crew and seven passengers including two babies.

Indonesia has a patchy aviation safety record."
 
35+ years ago, I worked for an airline that flew Twin Otters. They are a two engine turbo prop. They were originally built for use in jungle areas. Empty, they can land and take off in 500 ft. They can also perfectly fly with only one engine. Hopefully, they were able to crash land some where safely, and are just waiting to be located.

"Ahmad Munir, head of the airport authority in Makassar, said satellite data showed the aircraft's last known position was about 32 kilometers (20 miles) from Masamba.

Petrus Budi Prasetyo, commercial general manager for the airline, said earlier that the company has dispatched a Twin Otter and a helicopter to comb the area, along with an aircraft each from the military and police.

The Ministry of Transportation ordered the airliner to halt commercial operations of its Twin Otter turboprop planes for examination. According to its website, the domestic airliner operates four Twin Otters.

The 1981 Canadian-made plane joined Aviastar last January and underwent its most recent maintenance on Sept. 15, Petrus said."
 
"Soelistyo said the plane may not have been equipped with an emergency locator transmitter, a device attached to the so-called black boxes, which emits a signal indicating its position. Director General of Air Transportation Suprasetyo said officials were investigating that possibility.

Tomorrow's aerial search would focus on the sea, while on the ground, soldiers and policemen would search along the 150- mile route of the Masamba-Makassar flight."

"National Search and Rescue Agency chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo said the wreckage was found Monday in a forest in a mountainous area of Luwu District.

The turboprop plane, owned by the airline Aviastar Mandiri, was on a flight to Makassar, the provincial capital, carrying three crew members and seven passengers, including three children. No distress signal was received.

"The plane has been discovered along with a number of victims," Soelistyo said."
 
Thank goodness they have found the plane. Hopefully they will be able to find the other victims when they return tomorrow. I wonder if there is a possibility that some survived the crash?
 
Thank you for posting this heartbreaking news.
I don't know whether to be sad or glad.
Hopefully they will be able to identify each victim and discover the cause of this fatal crash.
