Police investigating suspicious death after man killed by arrow in Kitchener

TORONTO — Police are investigating a suspicious death in Kitchener after an unidentified man was shot and killed with an arrow on Monday morning.

Police and homicide investigators are at the scene in the Margaret Avenue and Union Street area of Kitchener, where the incident occurred at about 7 a.m.

Officers responded to a report of an injured man who had suffered life-threatening injuries from an arrow.

Paramedics transported the man to hospital where he later died of his injuries.

Police said there would be an increased police presence in the Margaret Avenue, Union Street, and Breithaupt Park area as officers continued their investigation.

11 schools in the area were put on hold-and-secure and the Waterloo District School Board tweeted that “all students and staff are safe.” Police said “the community should be vigilant and aware of their surroundings.”

I wonder if someone was practicing for bow hunting and an arrow went astray. I think that bow season just started in the Kitchener area.

Very strange and disturbing case.

This article has a few more details:
Gibbon lived alone in the Guelph St. house where he was raised and, because he worked nights at a local insurance company, routinely had a brisk morning walk before bed, said Linda Leinweber, his sister.

But on Monday, at about 7 a.m., an arrow struck with such force it pierced his padded fall clothing and sank deep within his abdomen. He slumped to the sidewalk on Margaret Ave., 550 metres from his house.

so....it wasn't as if the victim was attacked at home. He was walking through a residential neighbourhood. It would be difficult to stalk someone in that setting, while carrying a bow, without being seen. But since the victim did have a routine of doing that walk at that time, it does increase the odds that he was targetted. I would hate to think it was random and that there was a deranged person who might attack again.

Here is the location where the victim was found. Could someone have been hiding among the large evergreen trees by the low multi-unit building across the side street to the left? They would have provided some 'cover' for the attacker. Or, to the right about 100 metres, and across the street is a wooded area.

This is my city. It's not a normal occurrence. There is a wooded area near the homes that have deer. People are not to hunt here. It's scary as it really seems police have no leads.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service said the man is being sought as a result of information gathered during a "mirror canvass" early Wednesday morning, when 250 vehicles and pedestrians were stopped while travelling on Margaret Avenue.

This person will be turned in soon. Very small community. He can't hide forever. Someone knows something and that will weigh down the person.

The corner of Union and Margaret looks thickly wooded. Easy for someone to hide there.

Yes scmom, Breithaupt Park starts at the intersection of Union Street & Margaret Avenue...

It does seem he has switched his 'MO' tho he is still hunting humans STS.

The police also investigated a couple of other "possible" BB gun shootings in that same university area the week after the female student got hit in the eye.

As well, on August 17 a man was "shot in the temple" while driving along Union just on the other side of King St (Hwy 8), from the arrow murder.

I think BB gun "incidents" are just more frequent, so don't necessarily think they are related to the arrow incident....but it's worth considering.
