Woman arrested for claiming to be hurricane evacuee

After seeing pictures and reading accounts of the horrific devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, Lindsey Wilson had to help. A newcomer to volunteerism, the single woman took into her home a woman who claimed to have been displaced by the storm.

But Berretta Jo Hogg wasn't from New Orleans _ she wandered into an American Red Cross disaster relief center after being evicted last month from her suburban Atlanta apartment.

Hogg, 36, was arrested Saturday by Cobb County police for theft by deception, for faking being an evacuee and accepting about $1,000 in emergency funds from the American Red Cross, said police spokesman Wayne Delk, who warned people to use caution in opening their homes to others.
