Wynarka suitcase murder victim identified as Khandalyce Kiara Pearce; her mother Karlie Pearce-Stevenson was also violently killed

October 21, 2015 3:18pm

THE little girl whose body was found in a suitcase near Wynarka has been identified as Khandalyce Kiara Pearce, born in Alice Springs in 2006.

Her mother Karlie Jade Pearce-Stevenson was also brutally murdered, and dumped in Belanglo State Forest south of Sydney.

A joint investigation into their deaths has now been launched by SAPOL’s Major Crime Branch and the NSW Homicide Squad.

The circumstances and place of the murders is yet to be determined, but they were last seen in late 2008 and Ms Pearce-Stevenson’s skeletal remains were found in August 2010.

Extensive DNA analysis then determined the pair were mother and child.

Khandalyce was two years old when she was murdered.

"[They] come from a loving family and spent much of their lives in Alice Springs, Karlie was a single mother," Superintendent Bray said.

"This was a shocking crime, the people responsible for this are truly evil - both of these deaths were violent deaths.

"This is one of the most shocking crimes imaginable; one that has not only devastated a family, but also had a terrible impact on the wider community."

Suitcase murder breakthrough: Little girl, 2, whose body was dumped next to a highway in South Australia is the daughter of woman whose remains were discovered in Belanglo forest

The bones of Khandalyce were found in a suitcase filled with children's clothes dumped on the side of a highway near Wynarka in South Australia in July this year.
Karlie's bones were found by trailbike riders in NSW's Belanglo State Forest in 2010.
Her remains were found two metres from a sock, earring and size 10 Chain Reaction shirt reading Angelic that would have been sold in stores between 2003 and 2006.
The significant development that lead to both females being identified began on October 8 when a call to Crime Stoppers nominated Khandalyce as possibly being the little girl in the suitcase.
The caller had not seen Khandalyce or Ms Pearce-Stevenson for some time and believed they were missing.
Investigators then located a witness who had seen Khandalyce and her mother at Marion Shopping Centre in Adelaide in November 2008.
She had taken photos of Khandalyce wearing a pink dress. That dress is identical to that found with the remains in the suitcase.

Why a missing persons report for Khandalyce Pearce and her mother was withdrawn in 2009

2:22pm October 21, 2015

Karlie’s mother, who has since died, filed a missing person’s report in the Northern Territory on September 4 in 2009, however she withdrew the report after she was told they were safe and well.

“It’s understood she withdrew that missing person’s report in October of that year, after she was reassured that Karlie was safe and well, but did not want family contact at that time,” Detective Mick Willing said today.

Little girl lost: trying to identify the nameless victim of Wynarka's homicide

October 2, 2015

The case has similarities to the discovery of a girl's skeleton in NSW's Belanglo State Forest in 2010.
Her bones also showed signs of injury and it's believed the girl, known as Angel, could have been there as far back as 2000. Police have been down many avenues to identify this girl, including those never explored by NSW homicide investigators before.
Inquiries were made with state agencies that deal with young runaways and the DNA of relatives who feared the bones may have belonged to their missing loved one was matched – unsuccessfully – against Angel's.

Wynarka suitcase murder victim identified as Khandalyce Kiara Pearce; her mother Karlie Pearce-Stevenson was also violently killed

NIGEL HUNT THE ADVERTISER OCTOBER 21, 2015 9:00PM

THE travels of murdered mother Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and daughter Khandalyce are now the focus of detectives on the trail of their killer.

The pair travelled to Adelaide in November, 2008. It is unknown how long they stayed in the city before travelling to NSW, where Karlie was murdered, most likely in 2009.

Det-Supt Bray stressed that no family member was a suspect in the murders.

“Ms Pearce-Stevenson and Khandalyce are from a loving family,’’ he said.

Police have established that both Karlie and Kandalyce were born in Alice Springs. Karlie moved from the town in 2008 and started to travel with her daughter.

“Contact with the family became less over time and on September 4, 2009, Ms Pearce-Stevenson’s mother raised a missing-person report with the Northern Territory Police,’’ Det-Supt Bray said.

“It is understood that report was closed on September 10, 2009, after it was believed Ms Pearce-Stevenson was safe and well but did not want family contact. This is one of the most shocking crimes imaginable and has torn apart and devastated a loving family.

Identity of 'Angel of Belanglo' revealed, but double-murder mystery deepens

7:20pm October 21, 2015

By mid-September in 2010, Ivan Milat was ruled out as the person who took the life of a young woman dubbed the 'Angel of Belanglo', whose skeletal remains were found in that infamous bushland south of Sydney earlier that year.

Then judged to be anywhere between 13- and 25-year-old, the only clue as to the victim's identity was a t-shirt found within two metres of the body, emblazoned with the word "angelic".

Fast forward five years to today, and the angel finally has a name: Karlie Jade Pearce.

In a twist stranger than fiction, the single mother, who was 20 when she died, was identified by DNA taken from a pink dress near another body at the centre of a murder mystery some 1200km away – that of Karlie's two-year-old daughter, Khandalyce.

The call that gave police the breakthrough in two baffling murder investigations

October 21, 2015 - 8:19PM

Ava Benny-Morrison, Lisa Visentin and Nick Ralston

DNA from those bones, which were sitting unidentified in a box in the Glebe Morgue, were cross-matched to the bones found at Wynarka.

By Friday night last week, police had confirmed Angel was in fact Karlie Pearce-Stevenson, Khandalyce's mother

It is understood the mother had received a text message or a phone call telling her Karlie was ok but didn't want any further communication with her.

However investigators aren't certain whether it what Karlie or someone else that made the call or message.

Detectives have numerous lines of inquiry but would not say if they had a suspect in the killings. All they would say was that both mother and daughter suffered violent deaths and that family members have been ruled out as suspects. The pair at different times had visited friends in Darwin, Alice Springs, Adelaide and Canberra and investigators wanted anyone who might have seen mother and daughter at motels or caravan parks between 2006 and 2008 to come forward.
A joint agency operation involving homicide detectives in South Australia, NSW, the Northern Territory and ACT has now been established to investigate both deaths.

Detectives link Wynarka girl’s bones in suitcase to ‘Angel’ bones in Belanglo

BEN MCCLELLAN, JANET FIFE-YEOMANS AND STEVE MENZIES THE DAILY TELEGRAPH OCTOBER 22, 2015 12:00AM

DETECTIVES have more than one suspect in the murders of single mum Karlie Jade Pearce-Stevenson and her *little daughter Khandalyce, whose bodies were found five years and 1200km apart.

The family, including Khandalyce’s father and Karlie’s stepfather and stepbrother, were notified of their deaths on Wednesday morning and have been ruled out as suspects.

A Facebook page “Help find Karlie’ was setup in the years after Ms Pearce-Stevenson went missing to help reunite her with her sick mother who is believed to have died in 2010. The page was taken down a month ago.

Former netball coach Steve Darling, who coached Ms Pearce-Stevenson in the under-9 Braitling Primary School team in a northern suburb of Alice Springs, said the community had tried to help.

“I was on the page for ‘Find help Karlie’ which was taken down a month ago. The photos used by police were taken by a friend in a shopping centre in Adelaide (November, 2008, before she was stopped by police at Coober Pedy). That was the last they saw of her. A friend met up with her in town. There are so many questions,” he said.

Police urge public to help solve mother daughter murder mystery

5:57am October 22, 2015

Investigators are urging the public to be part of the next step in solving the mystery behind the brutal deaths of mother and daughter Karlie Jade Pearce-Stevenson and Khandalyce Kiara Pearce whose remains were found five years apart in NSW and South Australia.

Police have this morning confirmed they are following a number of lines of inquiry but are still trying to piece together the pair's final movements and how their remains ended up hundreds of kilometres apart.

Yesterday South Australia Police Detective Superintendent Des Bray revealed Khandalyce was born in 2006 in Alice Springs and along with her mother had been reported missing in 2009.

Karlie Pearce-Stevenson may have been dumped at notorious forest to throw police off scent

12:19pm October 22, 2015

Brandon Livesay

The body of brutally murdered mum Karlie Pearce-Stevenson may have been dumped at Belanglo Forest to throw police off the scent of the killer.

Police claim the mother could have been killed at another location before her body was taken to the notorious forest where serial killer Ivan Milat buried his victims, ABC reports.

"The forest is infamous and it's a reasonable theory to suggest the person [murder suspect] could have disposed of the body in the forest to throw us off track," South Australia Police Detective Superintendent Des Bray said.

"But it hasn't, and we're convinced that Karlie's death has nothing to do with the previous crimes associated with the forest."
