Karlie Pearce-Stevenson murdered in Belanglo State Forest: police

    7:00pm October 23, 2015

Karlie Pearce-Stevenson was likely violently murdered in or around Belanglo State Forest, with detectives hopeful of making an arrest after turning up more evidence in house searches in South Australia and ACT.

Investigators believe they've spoken to people with "actual knowledge" of what happened to Karlie and her daughter Khandalyce Kiara Pearce and believe multiple people may have been involved.

Police are almost certain the young Alice Springs mum, was killed in NSW and put her time of death around December 2008, nearly two years before her remains were found.

But where and when Khandalyce died and how her remains came to be found near a suitcase alongside a South Australian highway 1200km away and five years later is still a mystery.

Karlie and Khandalyce: Police question jailed paedophile over killings

    October 23, 2015 3:03pm
MATTHEW BENNS, MARK MORRI, JANET FIFE-YEOMANS and ASHLEE MULLANY

A KNOWN paedophile is being questioned by NSW homicide detectives over the double murder of mother Karlie Pearce-Stevenson and her daughter Khandalyce as police said they were hopeful of an early arrest.

The man was taken from minimum security in Cessnock jail on Wednesday and interviewed by officers* at a nearby police station before being returned and put in the maximum security wing.

He has been in jail since early 2013, leading to the possibility more than one person was involved in the murders.

The paedophile has previously been in the NSW jail system for child sex offences but he is currently serving four years, six months for other offences and was spoken to by police just days after they identified the bodies of the mother and daughter.

Wynarka murder: Three children referred to Families SA during investigation

    October 22, 2015 4:53pm

THREE children were referred to the state’s child protection agency as a result of police investigations to identify murdered toddler Khandalyce Pearce, The Advertiser understands.

The discovery of the child’s remains in a suitcase near Wynarka prompted about 1300 phone calls to Crime Stoppers.

SA Police Major Crime officer-in-charge Detective Superintendent Des Bray has said some of those calls led police to check on 180 children who were “potentially at risk”.

The majority were found to be safe but it is understood three children were later the subject of reports to the Child Abuse Report Line.

'She was a beautiful girl ': Ex-boyfriend of young mum found dead in Belanglo Forest reveals he was 'gutted' to find out about her murder - and how he had followed the 'girl in a suitcase' mystery with interest

    PUBLISHED: 12:11 EST, 25 October 2015 | UPDATED: 12:33 EST, 25 October 2015

A man who once dated single mother Karlie Jade Pearce-Stevenson said he was 'gutted' after learning that she and her two-year-old daughter Khandalyce had suffered violent deaths.
Kassidi Lally met Ms Pearce-Stevenson in Alice Springs and the pair briefly dated when she was around 17 or 18-years-old, several years before her remains were found in Belanglo State Forest.
Mr Lally learned of the devastating news when his current girlfriend - who followed the 'baby in the suitcase' murder - told him the single mother and her daughter had been formally identified.
'I was gutted. I was in complete shock. I didn't say anything. I couldn't really put a sentence together or anything,'

Mr Lally, who last saw Ms Pearce-Stevenson at a bus stop after she had fallen pregnant with her daughter Khandalyce Kiara Pearce, said his former flame had always been an 'awesome chick'.
'She was always really bright and bubbly, funny, cheeky ... she was just a beautiful girl really'
He said the news had rocked the close-knit regional town of Alice Springs, whose residents could not believe the mother and daughter had been 'dumped' more than '1,000 kilometres apart'.

How UOW's Dr Susan Hayes assisted in police search for 'Angel'

    By LISA WACHSMUTH Oct. 24, 2015, 4:03 p.m

The cold case of the woman dubbed ‘Angel’ has haunted University of Wollongong facial anthropologist Dr Susan Hayes.

So when police this week publicly identified the woman whose skeletal remains were discovered in Belanglo State Forest in 2010 as Karlie Jade Pearce-Stevenson, Dr Hayes felt a sense of peace.

Dr Hayes - currently on an archaelogical dig on a remote Indonesian island - said the identification would also allow her to analyse her unique facial approximation technique.

‘’From what I saw (of Karlie’s photo) I think there are some aspects that worked well and others that could have been done differently,’’ she said.

‘’… But although the identification of ‘Angel’ is going to be very helpful at an academic level, the most helpful thing is that Karlie and her little daughter will finally get to go home.’’

Karlie Pearce-Stevenson's former boyfriend 'shocked' by news of murder

Natalie Whiting reported this story on Friday, October 23, 2015 06:16:00

KASSIDI LALLY: We dated those for those few months, and I didn't really see her or talk to her or anything, didn't keep in contact or anything because I was always working. The last time I saw her, I drove past her at a bus stop I think in town in Alice, at the main bus station, and that's when she was pregnant - she looked pretty far along, too, so.

Girl in suitcase: Mother was a troubled teen with a quiet but beautiful personality

    Last updated 09:12, October 24 2015

Karlie Pearce-Stevenson had a beautiful personality but was troubled in her teenage years, according to a close friend who welcomed the then-teenager into her Alice Springs home after she fled a family argument.

Jennifer Adams, who lived in Alice Springs until 2006 and met Pearce-Stevenson through mutual friends, said the girl everybody knew as "mouse" stayed with her for a week during 2004 or 2005.

"She just stayed with me as she was fighting with her family. She was a bit of a defiant teenager like a lot of girls that age."

"She was so lost. [She] always seemed to be struggling."

Adams could not recall the exact nature of the feud between Pearce-Stevenson and her family, but said it related to "silly stuff."

Pearce-Stevenson's mother Colleen Povey, who passed away from illness in 2012, was a "lovely" person, she said.

"[They] just clashed a bit I think. Not [coming] home on time, etcetera.

"She was a beautiful girl though, I'm just so shattered for her that this is the outcome."

Murder victim Karlie Pearce-Stevenson's identity stolen, mobile phone used after death

Murder victim Karlie Pearce-Stevenson's identity was used by at least one other person after her death and her mobile phone used until the middle of 2011, police have revealed.

"In respect to what we know about the suspects involved in the financial aspects of the bank account transactions, Centrelink fraud and the use of the phone, I can say that we know that at least one offender was a male. There may have been more, and at least two are females.

"Those suspects either resided at, or are associated with or were listed in connection with, properties at Davoren Park, Hillbank, Holden Hill and Charnwood in Canberra."

Police said a female attended a Centrelink office at Salisbury in Adelaide on December 15, 2010, and produced identity papers when she posed as Karlie.
