NH - Claire Marie Cocuzzo, 64, Bethlehem, 5 Oct 2015

CONCORD, N.H. -- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is requesting the public to report any information regarding the whereabouts of
Claire Marie Cocuzzo, of Westwood, MA.
Claire is an experienced hiker and backpacker, and had plans to hike the northeast section of a route that hikers affectionately call the "Pemi loop". Her plan was to begin her hike at the Mt. Garfield trailhead in Bethlehem, trek out to Bondcliff, and then return back the way she came. Relatives confirmed that her car is still at the Mt. Garfield trailhead. As of today, she is 6 days overdue

If anyone has spotted her, or interacted with her on trail, please contact NH Fish and Game:

    Contact:
    Lt. James Kneeland: (603) 271-3127
    Lt. Heidi Murphy: (603) 271-3127

Yikes 6 days over due and we are just hearing about this. I hope she is somewhere safe and has food and water with her.
    Don't mind the misspellings.

Given her experience, and the length of her trip, she likely packed at least one form of water treatment.

The section where she was hiking, while challenging, is extremely popular -- and even moreso in foliage season. I was in the area myself for part of the week. Even mid-week, there would have been plenty of hikers around that would have been able to get the word out had they seen an imperiled backpacker on trail, even if they did nothing more than hike back down to their car and call 911, or hike to the next tent site and notify the AMC caretaker.

I have a terrible feeling about this

Totally O/T, but I didn't realize Geraldine Largay had been found! What timing, just when this lady is now lost.

Hoping Claire Marie is found soon.

(Off to read about the details on Geraldine)

There are unconfirmed reports from inside NH hiking community that SAR volunteers have discovered Claire's body of a in a streambed, near Twin Mountain.

My thoughts to SAR teams working hard to bring her back to her family.

At that time, the state had received more than 30 inches of rain. It is believed that Cocuzzo was swept away while crossing the swollen Gale River.

Cocuzzo planned to hike from the Mount Garfield Trailhead to Bond Cliff and back, which is about 26 miles. Relatives said it's not uncommon for Cocuzzo to take multi-day hikes over such a distance.

Likely cause of death highlighted above, probably drowning, among other things.

To put the amount of rain in to perspective, most of NH had been in a drought since this spring. The leading rain band that came across ahead of Hurricane Joaquim caused a good bit of flodding in the north country, including places that don't typically flood, such as Portland, Maine:

The Gale River is part of the Pemigewasset River Valley. This graph taken from USGS data shows the Pemigewasset levels from the station closest to the Gale. The triangles on the graph show what the average river levels have been, over the last ~22 years. As you can see, in the days leading up to the storm, the river levels were well below normal. Then, waters skyrocket in less than a day.

Drought to severe flooding in less than 24 hours.
