Sarasota County deputies are searching for a 9-week-old boy missing from North Port and are trying to determine what his parents may have done before they left Florida recently.

Chance Walsh’s family contacted law enforcement Sunday to report he hadn’t been seen since Sept. 9, according to Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

His parents, Kristen Bury and Joseph Walsh, are longtime drug users, deputies said, and family hadn’t been able to check on his well being as a result.

At this time, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office has charged Chance Walsh’s parents, Joseph Walsh and Kristen Bury, with child neglect. They are each being held on $150,000 bond in Jasper County, SC, awaiting extradition to the Sarasota County Jail. A Sarasota County detective traveled to South Carolina to interview the parents.

Arrest paperwork indicates cadaver dogs found evidence of human remains at the couple’s home in North Port. There was also blood in various places in the home. The arrest paperwork also quotes Bury as saying she despised Chance because he wasn’t her other son, who had died.

Assistance Needed in Case of Missing Baby
News Release #: 15-221
October 7, 2015
http://www.sarasotasheriff.org/news...ssistance-needed-in-case-of-missing-baby.html

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is investigating the disappearance of a baby boy from North Port and is asking the public for information on his parents' activities before they left the state.

On October 4, the maternal grandmother of nine-week-old Chance Walsh contacted the sheriff's office concerned that she had not seen him since September 9. She and the boy's paternal grandmother made a number of unsuccessful attempts to check on Chance's welfare because his parents, Kristen Bury and Joseph Walsh, are longtime drug users. The family contacted law enforcement after the pair told them they were in a vehicle crash in South Carolina, but told relatives several different stories including that the child was unharmed, that he died in the crash and that they gave him to a woman at a hotel in Georgia.

Detectives confirmed with South Carolina law enforcement that there was no baby in the vehicle at the time of the crash and no room for a car seat. They also confirmed with Georgia law enforcement that the couple stayed at an Augusta hotel but there was no baby with them. A woman staying at the hotel reported that Kristen tried to sell baby clothes to her and that Kristen told her the baby had died three weeks earlier.

At this time the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has charged Joseph Walsh and Kristen Bury with Child Neglect. They are each being held on $150,000 bond in Jasper County, SC, awaiting extradition to the Sarasota County Jail.

In addition to working with the FBI, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children is issuing a bulletin seeking information on Chance or his parents to assist with this investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Section at 941.861.4074 or if you wish to remain anonymous contact Crime Stoppers of Sarasota County, 941.366.TIPS (8477), or online at www.sarasotacrimestoppers.com.

Deputies said Kristin had another baby who died a year ago named Duane. Her arrest report said she told her mother she could not take care of Chance because she despised him, and he was not Duane.

NBC2 also spoke with a high school classmate of Kristen's. She said the house Kristen and Joseph lived in burned down two weeks before Chance was born.

The community rallied together to help them find housing and get baby clothes.

For their part, Bury and Walsh – who have a history of drug use, according to police – aren't cooperating with authorities and have allegedly showed no interest in the whereabouts of their young son, police said.

In retrospect, the friend says, Bury and Walsh's most recent Facebook posts seem to suggest they knew that they would be apprehended by authorities.

"No matter what life brings, good or bad, know that I will always love you with all of my heart," Bury wrote on Sept. 21. "I will always love you as well," Walsh replied.

John Tapp lived across the street from the couple. “Things were kind of peculiar from the start after the child was born, I noticed,” Tapp said.

He said the family first moved into the neighborhood about four months ago. Both parents are known drug users, and law enforcement confirmed drug-related arrests. Tapp said the parents would take Chance on walks in the middle of the night. Also strange people often came over to visit, he said.

“People coming at odd hours with a newborn in the house, that’s another sign that there’s something that ain’t right,” Tapp added.

The couple were “long-time drug users,” which heightened concerns for the baby’s safety, the report said. Relatives contacted the sheriff’s office after learning the couple was involved in a vehicle wreck in South Carolina on Oct. 2.

The wreck occurred on Interstate 95 North in Hardeeville, S.C., between 9-10 a.m., according to Hardeeville police. The department did not release any further information.

The couple’s two-door vehicle was turned in the opposite direction of traffic and had significant front-end damage, according to a WINK News reporter who happened to drive by the wreck. No other involved vehicles were seen in the area.

Bury told her father about the crash the next day, then asked him for money.

NORTH PORT, Fla.- A former roommate and friend of Kristen Bury and Joseph Walsh says she was one of the last people to see the couple before they rushed out of town.

Diane Wood says she knew something was wrong and questioned why they were so desperate to leave the state but because she did not have proof, she didn’t contact authorities.

“They told me they were going on a 10-day trip. They wanted to move out of Florida. They were looking for a new place to live so they were just going to drive around and see what interested them and see if they would like to live there and then they would come back. So when I heard about Chance [missing] I was just hoping they had left him with a family member,” said Wood.

SARASOTA COUNTY - Joseph Walsh is suspected of beating his infant son Chance to death before leaving him in his crib to decompose, according to the 36-year-old's arrest report released by the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office this afternoon.

Authorities extradited Walsh from the Jasper County Detention Center in South Carolina to the Sarasota County Jail at about noon today, the Sheriff's Office reported.

Detectives charged Walsh with first degree murder in addition to the child neglect charge he already faced.

[..]
“Joseph said during his interview that Kristen told him she did not want them to call 911 because she did not want to lose both people she loves in the same day,” the arrest report states.

The couple placed Chance's body into his crib and left him to decompose, according to the report.

When the stench became overwhelming, Walsh wrapped the infant in garbage bags and placed his reminds in a bedroom closet, according to the report.

As reported Tuesday, Bury allegedly told investigators that she and Walsh got into an argument that morning, and that Walsh began hitting Chance.

Bury said Walsh then pressed a pacifier into his 7-week-old son's mouth until the infant began bleeding, according to the unredacted arrest report.

Walsh then allegedly took Chance into a bathroom, the arrest report states. He came out a short time later and told Bury that there was a diaper wipe in Chance's throat.

“Kristen Bury noted that Chance was turning blue when he was brought out of the bathroom,” the arrest report states.

“Attempts to remove the diaper wipe were done, and after extreme measures, the wipe was removed by Kristen. Kristen stated that when removing the diaper wipe from within Chance's throat, trauma to Chance's mouth occurred.”

The arrest report states that Chance was then laid to bed. When Bury tried to feed Chance formula hours later, she saw he was gasping for air.

Chance died a short time later, the arrest report states.

“When their arms are at their side, you would pull their arms up and the resistance that they give you tells you because a normal baby would just let go,” he said.

He tried to call DCF a little more than a week before. DCF confirmed they received a call from Gutierrez but that investigators failed to look into his claims since Gutierrez had no first-hand knowledge of Bury’s drug use.

In one report from this past July, a caseworker received a call that the mother, Kristen Bury -- who has also been charged with Chance's death -- may be on drugs. It was determined that there wasn't enough information in the call to warrant a caseworker going out to the home. DCF said the caller did not appear to have first-hand knowledge that they could use, and Chance was still in the hospital at the time. DCF says the hospital did not report any concerns at the time.

SARASOTA, Fla. – Joseph Walsh, the father of Chance Walsh, the newborn who was found buried in a remote wooded area in North Port in Oct. 2015, has been indicted on a first-degree felony murder charge, the state Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.

Walsh initially faced a second-degree murder charge.

The indictment came back after the grand jury met on Tuesday morning. In Florida, a first-degree murder charge can only be brought forth by a grand jury’s indictment.

If Walsh is convicted, he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty because the case did not meet statutory criteria, Assistant State Attorney Suzanne O’Donnell said.

From her jail cell Bury wrote to her husband, also in jail for the murder.

“I can’t believe how crazy this all is. We are actually famous. Not the way I wanted to be!”

“I never stop thinking about you. I want to get our names tattooed around our ring fingers as wedding bands,” she wrote. “We get out, we’re doing it immediately.”
