Neighbors reported last seeing Sterner around 1:30 p.m., about an hour before the fire was called in. They said she appeared healthy and well.

For most of the day, investigators floated two main possibilities: A disoriented Sterner, 69, wandered off after being overcome by smoke or she was dead in the basement, the only area firefighters couldn’t get to until long after the fire was extinguished.

Kingston Fire Chief Frank Guido called in a Stroudsburg-based cadaver dog team to scour the home. The dogs didn’t detect Sterner’s scent.

“She’s not in the house,” Guido said late Tuesday night. “We can confirm she’s not in the house.”

The chief noted the dogs were also led throughout the neighborhood and they didn’t pick up Sterner’s scent.

This certainly is a strange story. Going to be interested to see how it all plays out.

Just based on the bare facts of the case, she seemed like the most obvious person, but it seemed so unlikely to me that I never even considered posting such a suggestion.

I don't remember seeing anything about her having a mental illness or dementia. Why on earth would a woman this age burn down her own house? And why kill the dog? Smh
