Police Officer Shot in East Harlem, FDR Drive Shut Down: Sources

A police officer was shot in the head during a confrontation with an armed man by the FDR Drive in East Harlem, law enforcement sources say.
Police were first called to the area for a report of gunshots fired and an armed man riding a bicycle around 102nd Street, a senior police official tells NBC 4 New York.

Officer Randolph Holder, 33, a five-year veteran working in Police Service Area 5, took a bullet to the forehead at 8:45 p.m. as he and other cops pursued the perp, who was riding a bicycle at E. 120th St. and FDR Drive, a high-ranking police source said.

After Randolph was shot, cops found a 32-year-old man, believed to be involved in the shooting, suffering from a bullet wound to the leg at E. 125th St., the sources said. He was taken into custody.

This is why stop and frisk should not be stopped. This guy may have been off the streets if Deblasio wasn't backing down. He is reversing everything that Bloomberg has done. Jmo.

Officer Randolph Holder was 33-years-old

His father and his grandfather were both police officers in Guyana, and Holder joined the NYPD after he moved here.

Holder's father, also called Randolph, said that his son had 'always wanted to be a cop, just like his dad'.

He paid tribute to a 'fun-loving, caring young man, always with a smile on his face',

His father said and that he had dated Malika Clarke-Yarde, 33, since they were both 14 and recently split although they remained close with him helping her raise her child although he was not the father.

Sounds like Randolph was a kind person and a decent human being -- the kind of police officer we need ! Smdh.
:moo:

May Officer Holder rest gently , and my condolences to his grieving loved ones !

Rest in peace Officer Holder. My deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Suspect in Fatal Shooting of New York Officer Was on the Run for Weeks, Officials Say

The police had gone looking for Tyrone Howard at least 10 times since Sept. 1, when, investigators believe, he rode up to a rival just after midnight and shot him. But 10 times he eluded them.

[....]

Mr. Howard, 30, was charged with first-degree murder and robbery. At a packed arraignment in Lower Manhattan late Wednesday night, a judge ordered that Mr. Howard be held in jail without bail. Well over 100 police officers attended the hearing, as did members of Officer Holder’s family. At times people shouted obscenities at the defendant.

[....]

Indeed, one of the ways Mr. Howard knew the officer approaching him on a darkened pathway of F.D.R. Drive — besides by the silver shield dangling from his neck — was that they had encountered each other before, the police said. Mr. Howard had 23 arrests as an adult, including one in connection with a shootout in June 2009 on a basketball court in the East River Houses that wounded two bystanders: an 11-year-old boy and a 77-year-old man. (The case did not go forward, officials said, because prosecutors were unable to present any witnesses who could identify Mr. Howard.)

Five years into a promising police career, including six commendations, Officer Holder, an immigrant from Guyana, had begun telling relatives of his growing sense of the dangers of the job he loved.

I'm not saying this is worse because he was an immigrant, but think about coming to a new country and all the work and effort behind that... he lived in America intentionally just as he was intentionally a police officer and it adds another element of heartbreak.

RIP Officer Holder.

I agree, bluesneakers. I always think the same thing when someone who came here to live from another country is murdered. They often come to make a better life for themselves and their families. Officer Holder repaid his chosen country for the freedoms he was given by becoming a public servant, which sadly cost him his life.

NYPD: Gun that may have been used in officer's death found
Divers searching the Harlem River recovered a gun "consistent" with the weapon used to kill a police officer during a foot chase in Manhattan, the New York Police Department said Sunday.
Chief of Manhattan detectives William Aubry said the weapon was found around 3 a.m. Sunday. The gun will be tested for fingerprints and DNA, as well as test fired, to determine whether it is the same gun that was used to shoot Officer Rudolph Holder in the head.

"That firearm is consistent with the firearm that we were looking for," Aubry said.

I hope Sharpton does not use the funeral as a place to take jabs at the police. Even in the articles he does so, imo. Saying something like ' when we see an officer truly doing a good job then we have to stand up in support'---implying it is unusual...

“When we find a police officer that’s trying to protect us and serve our community and actually puts their lives on the line to do that, we stand up for those police officers,” Sharpton said at his weekly rally Saturday.

Rev. Al Sharpton, a longtime critic of NYPD, will speak at funeral of slain cop Randolph Holders

From the link:

A minister close to the family said Holder’s father met with Sharpton on Saturday, and asked him to attend and speak.

A day earlier, Sharpton paid tribute to the fallen officer, laying a wreath outside the Police Service Area in East Harlem where Holder served.

“When we find a police officer that’s trying to protect us and serve our community and actually puts their lives on the line to do that, we stand up for those police officers,” Sharpton said at his weekly rally Saturday.

I find that^^^ highly insulting to officers in general.
