Officer Tanner Tixier said Wednesday morning that police believe the assailant was driving a Corolla or Camry with a spoiler on the trunk and dark tinted windows. The car also had a University of New Mexico plate and may contain the digits "200."

The suspect is described as a white male with a dark complexion, possibly Hispanic, with short, dark hair, possibly in a fade haircut. He has a thin manicured goatee around his mouth, a thin face, soft jaw and average build. He was wearing a black shirt with gold or yellow writing on it.

The police said a driver pulled up and fired into another car, striking the girl, who was in the back seat with her 7-year-old brother. The girl, identified as Lilly Garcia, later died at a hospital. Her father had picked them up from school, Gordon Eden, the chief of the Albuquerque police, said at a news conference.

Police: person of interest detained in road rage killing
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- A person of interest was taken into custody Wednesday in a road rage shooting that killed a 4-year-old girl on a freeway in New Mexico's largest city, police said.

Police said they would provide more information later on the break in the case. They have pleaded for the public's help in finding a man they say opened fire on a pickup truck driven by Lilly Garcia's father soon after he picked up her and her 7-year-old brother from school Tuesday.

    Tony Torrez, 32, Arrested

    [snipped]

Police said late Wednesday that they arrested Tony Torrez, 32, in the killing, hours after taking him into custody as a "person of interest."

Albuquerque police spokesman Officer Tanner Tixier said tips helped lead police to a house, and detectives saw a person matching the suspect's description leave in a green car. The car was pulled over in a parking lot without incident, he said.

Man who shot 4-year-old New Mexico girl Lilly Garcia in road-rage killing was charged in prior attack

    [snipped]

A man charged in the fatal road-rage shooting of a 4-year-old New Mexico girl was involved in another attack nine years earlier, a new report claims.

Tony Torrez, 31, who police said confessed to firing into Lilly Garcia's car and shooting her in the head Tuesday, allegedly pulled a gun on another driver in 2006, the Albuquerque Journal reported.

That incident, reportedly detailed in a complaint obtained by the paper, resulted in three shots being fired by Torrez's gun.
