Harvest season dampers search efforts for missing man
"-A 39-year-old man is missing in Trinity County.

Shannon House was last seen on October 11th at 7:00 p.m. by his brother.

He was on their property about 17 miles from the Kettenpom store on the way to Covelo.

His family is asking the community to help search for him.

“If we could get the property owners out there to take a second look and please search their properties," Lavonna Kehm, the mother of Shannon House, said.

House’s family searched for him for 24-hours before filing a missing person’s report with the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office.

However, the sheriff’s office did not conduct a search.

According to House’s mother, this was due time of the year it is.

"They told us ‘tis the season' they didn't want to be responsible for someone going on the property this time of year and possibly getting hurt," Lavonna Kehm said.

The family has been left to foot the bill for the search, due to law enforcement not getting involved."

“It’s been a nightmare,” choked out Lavonna Kehm as she spoke about the months since her son, Shannon House, went missing between Kettenpom and Covelo. House, age 39, had been working on a marijuana farm with his brother when he disappeared from the place sometime between 7 p.m. on October 11 and 4 a.m. on the 12th. House had abruptly quit taking medication before he disappeared and seemed somewhat disoriented the last day.

Kehm said that she is “hoping that someone picked him up” in a passing vehicle but she also fears that somehow he died on the mountain and hasn’t been found. The family has searched the area intensely with no success. “Family came from Redding, Fortuna, Chico…all over,” she said. “They found footprints down to the pond but the pond was searched and nothing was found.”

The tracks showed what are believed to be the prints of House’s bare feet. The shoes he had been wearing the day he went missing were left behind in his car along with his wallet and cell phone.

Such a sad case.

Updated news. The FB page mentioned a possible sighting in early March in Fortuna, CA which is in adjoining Humboldt county.

According to this article, dogs were used for tracking and came up empty. There was a possible sighting in Oregon.
They planned to do a drone flight.

This brief KMUD radio interview with Shannon's sister from late December has a few details. She said he was walking fairly long distances each day, so he could have gotten pretty far from his house.

I can't believe it's been over a year. There are regular posts about Shannon on the FB page.

This is so sad for his family...not to know what happened to Shannon. This is wild country and very difficult to search due to terrain and marijuana grows. I hope he is found soon. Prayers for Shannon and his family.

Note the event for the families of the missing in Sacramento June 9-10. Quoting Kym’s beautiful writing....

Long after the missing posters on those who have vanished have faded and blown away in the wind, some family members will keep vigil. Some will keep vigil silently–barely acknowledging out loud the loose thread that caught on their heart when their loved one vanished and which now threatens to unravel their life. Some will keep vigil by reaching out to the media or police or both on a regular basis, hoping even decades after their loss that they will get answers. They hope but, at the same time, they fear to know for sure that their loved one is dead.
If you have a family or friend missing, an event this June 9 in Sacramento may be helpful to you. This free event will have law enforcement available to help record information. Family members can give DNA samples if they choose to help with identification. They are also “encouraged to bring photos, along with medical and dental records of their missing loved ones.”

Summary of the case

Shannon Michael House
Born 4 May 1976
Caucasian male
Brown hair and eyes
Wears Rayban prescription sunglasses
5 feet 11 inches tall
300 - 325 pounds
Last seen barefoot in dark shorts and olive t-shirt
Shannon had suffered a serious back injury in January 2010. He had recently lost 100 pounds, so he suffered from obesity. He also suffered from depression.

Although Shannon's hometown is Fortuna CA, he and his brother were working on a marijuana farm on the Mina Road, approximately 17 miles south of Kettenpom CA and near the Trinity/Mendocino County boundary. He suffered from depression, and went off his medications a couple of days before he disappeared. On 11 October 2015, he seemed disoriented. Sometime between 7:20 PM 11 October 2015 and 4 AM the following morning, Shannon wandered off. He left his cell phone, footwear, and wallet in his truck. His mother, brothers, and friends searched unsuccessfully for him on the 12th. Shannon's footprints were found leading to a pond; the pond was searched, without success. His mother LK then called the Trinity County Sheriff's Office at about 9 AM 13 October. TCSO declined to search in the vicinity of the farm for fear of barging into mafia-run pot plantations and their guards.

On 19 October, Shannon was reportedly seen in Covelo, approximately 20 miles south of the farm. By this time, his family had engaged a private helicopter to search.

In December 2015, Mendocino County Sheriff's Office subsequently searched the marijuana farm with three cadaver dogs and nine people, with no result. Privately engaged drones have also been used in the search.

Shannon's mother left his truck where it was found with his personal items inside. She put the key in the ignition in hopes he might return. Shannon has also been widely postered and advertised on social media.

Disclosure: In 1983, I lived on a ranch on Mina Road that bestrode the county lines. My personal experience of the locale will shade the following.

Possible scenarios:

He caught a ride with someone.
Possible. Traffic is scanty, but the area's remoteness makes it a near certainty that any driver will stop for someone walking.

He walked out. After all, he had walked off 100 pounds in the months prior to vanishing.
Problem. Bare feet, rough terrain. Even the Mina Road is graded gravel with plentiful rocks. He would need feet calloused as shoe leather to be able to walk any considerable distance.

He simply wandered off.
Probable. Off his meds means a probable mental break. He could have left chasing after who knows what delusion. At that rate, I would refer to outdoorsman's lore--a tired creature takes the easiest path possible; that is usually downhill. Search the drainages coming down off that mountain for him.
Or he wandered onto one of those local syndicate pot plantations that are guarded by thugs with automatic weapons. In which case there is an excellent chance he was murdered.

But we shan't know what happened to Shannon until we find him. Let's hope for the best.

Today, Shannon House, a Humboldt County native, has been missing three years.

On October 11, 2015, he left his residence in a remote area of Trinity County near the Mendocino County line. He is believed to have been barefoot and left his wallet and phone behind.

The area around where he went missing has been searched including by helicopter and several search parties. But, as yet, nothing has turned up.

His mother, Lavonna Kehm, keeps hoping that someone somewhere will know something. If you are that someone, please contact the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 623-3740. You can also call Lavonna at 707-498-145

Shannon House: Missing for Three Years; $10,000 Reward

Latest from The Trinity Journal:

Trinity's missing

Now they are saying he disappeared from Kettenpom, which is north of the Mendocino County line rather than north.
