Dad Makes Amazing Halloween Wheelchair Costumes for Kids

Ryan Weimer's son Keaton, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy at just 9 months old. Keaton's diagnosis forever changed their family and the lives of many other children.

Just after Keaton got his first wheelchair, along came Halloween. Ryan asked him "Hey, pal. What do you want to be for Halloween?" Keaton thought for no more than a second and responded, "A pirate!"

A couple of days later Ryan had a brainwave. "Keaton has a wheelchair he cruises around in, and every pirate needs a ship, so I'll just build one around his chair!" He didn't know how he was going to do it, but he knew it could be done. Ryan drew out some rough plans (and had to start over once or twice) and in the end he came out with a pretty awesome pirate ship for Keaton to sail.

Wanting to help other children, Ryan and his wife, Lana, who have two other children with SMA, founded the Magic Wheelchair, a non-profit organisation whose mission is to give kids in wheelchairs an unforgettable Halloween by creating custom costumes for them at no expense to their families.

I read about another dad who constructed a costume around his son's wheelchair. There was also an article about it on Huffpost but doesn't mention the same organization. This article references the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation which also has ideas for costumes built around wheelchairs:

It's wonderful to see some really caring Dads out there. Thanks for the story about Christopher and Dana Reeve. Is that the same Christopher Reeve who played Superman and had a riding accident?
