Two men from near Denton, TX were arrested October 25. They are Carroll "BJ" Ballard and Blake Sibley. A third man, the alleged shooter, Marshall McKenna of Ponder, TX is on the run, considered armed and dangerous. He is thought to have left Oregon. Both photos are McKenna.

Articles from Dallas about the three men and the crime.

Carroll “B.J.” Ballard, 22, and Blake Sibley, 20, were booked into the Josephine County Jail on charges of murder and robbery, the Oregon State Police said. Investigators, meanwhile, searched Monday for 23-year-old Marshall McKenna, whose last known address was in Ponder, Texas

According to his very honest posts on his FB page, victim Roger Huntington had struggled with addiction.

On October 12 he posted about his recent sobriety. He indicated he was taking a FB break. His last post was October 21. It may be that he went to Lake Selmac, about 60 miles away then. He had been seen in that area for a couple of days, according to an earlier report.

Since then, friends have posted tributes on his page.

We don't know yet if this is a random murder. However, I did find a Crescent City connection with BJ Ballard. His FB page shows him standing by a fishing boat called "Kimbo." He mentions crab fishing in Northern CA. I checked the location of the boat...Crescent City. One of the Texas articles linked above says that Ballard has relatives in northern CA. It remains to be seen if Ballard crossed paths with Roger Huntington before killing him.

I really hope it wasn't a relapse by RH and a drug deal gone bad with these three.

Man. Some addicts look like a million bucks when they get clean and sober. But they mostly choose to look like they want to remain gritty looking in the eyes of the public.

I think he was robbed while just coming off the wagon. Or maybe the past has caught up to him. Idk. But people did post on his Facebook. So I guess he was definitely loved. Even if he didn't think so.

Last night I was able to see Marshall McKenna's FB page briefly before he took it down. He and Ballard are FB friends. Both men appear to have children. Poor kids!

I couldn't find a connection to Sibley on either one of their pages. I also couldn't find a FB page for Blake Sibley that I'm positive is his, so I won't post anything.

This photo of a gun posted by Ballard on October 10 gave me chills. I wonder what caliber was used to kill RH. This gun is a 45.

Idk. But Carroll may want to change his name before going to prison since it would be deemed more in a feminine light. Jmo. Plus he also calls himself BJ which is truly not that much better since a bj is considered a.... ...
amongst the youth and most inmates these days.

That kid maybe up craps creek. Jmo

The Josephine County DA is dealing with at least nine homicides! This may not seem like much, but this is a rural area with a population of about 83,000.

As the sheriff points out, lack of funding reduces LE presence.

Josephine County Sheriff Dave Daniel said he's concerned as homicides continue to go up throughout the year.

"We're showing a trend here in Josephine County where things are not getting better, they're getting worse. Largely I think that's due to funding and the lack of presence that used to be here in Josephine County," he said.

Daniel said cases are going uninvestigated...and crime is on the rise.

Are the 9 locals. Or body dumps. Or passer bys. That is alot for a rural area. But 83,000 is spread out which tells me that le may need to hire more cops. Idk

I think most are locals, just based on my general recollection of news stories. Parts of the county are rather "Wild West" areas. Marijuana growing and other drugs. Money that used to help fund LE came from timber, but that isn't as available now. Tax levies are routinely voted down. There is a very independent element living there who are happy with less LE IMO.

A few more details and thoughts:

Huntington's body was discovered by a jogger, who called 911 at about 6:40 p.m. Friday, according to Josephine County District Attorney Ryan Mulkins.

I wonder what time RH was shot, because at 6:34 pm Ballard commented on a post on his own FB page about something trivial. I'm assuming the time on his FB is PDT. RH must have been shot earlier. Ballard must have nerves of steel to participate in a robbery/homicide in the daylight and post on FB afterward. JMO

Ballard was arrested in Ashland, and Sibley was arrested in Josephine County, although more detailed locations for the arrests weren't divulged.

So Sibley stayed in Josephine county. Why? I'm curious how and why Ballard ended up in Ashland (which is in Jackson county, adjoining Josephine county). Was he dropped off there by McKenna before he possibly headed south on I-5 to CA sixteen miles away. Does Ballard know someone in Ashland? Where did they find him? It's ironic that RH was headed to Ashland to visit his nephew, according to a report on KOBI posted earlier.

I'm impressed that LE caught two of these guys so quickly and in two different places. They either left a lot of clues behind, someone was a witness and was able to give a good description, or there is some previous known connection to RH. The murder sounds bold and brazen, so maybe they didn't take precautions afterward either. I'll be surprised if meth isn't involved. JMO

This is a nice article about Roger quoting his family. I missed it earlier. I haven't heard any more about the case recently, but I will dig a little more.

His older sister Jane Miller wants him to be remembered as more than a murder victim.

Huntington was a truck driver, outdoorsman and, sometimes, a wanderer, Miller said. He loved fishing at Lake Selmac. Miller, nine years older, introduced her brother to the lake when he was a young boy joining their family on camping trips. “He loved to fish,” Miller said, tears welling as she shuffled through yellowing photographs of a young Huntington standing by the lake, dangling a small trout from his hand in one shot, curling an arm in a teenage strongman pose in another — Lake Selmac and its boat ramp in the background.
“That mound of dirt you see in the background by the lake, that was the boat ramp back then,” Miller said. “He loved that lake. He loved that place. He was always stopping there.”
The bittersweet irony to Miller is the place her cherished brother died.

“He was born (in a car) on the bridge going into Cave Junction,” Miller said. “It was a big news story back then. He was born there and died within a mile or so.”

One of his sisters was shot and died 32 years ago. His poor mother, who lives in Grants Pass. :(

Huntington's murder was over a drug deal. :( Blake Sibley took a plea as will Ballard this month. As of this article, McKenna was still on the loose, but see next post for news on that.

Sibley’s plea this week was part of a negotiated resolution that spared him from an additional charge of unlawful use of a weapon and second-degree assault. Simcoe said the deal in no way involved Sibley giving authorities information on McKenna’s whereabouts, of which he is completely ignorant.
According to his attorney, Dan Simcoe, Sibley and his cohort Carroll “B.J.” Ballard, 23, had already made numerous trips north from Texas to purchase marijuana, but on their latest voyage they brought a third party named Marshall McKenna, 23, of Ponder, Texas.
The three men met Huntington late last year near the Lake Selmac, Oregon boat ramp, off U.S. 199 between Cave Junction and Grants Pass.
Simcoe said the trio had arranged to purchase 15 pounds of marijuana, which could sell for four times as much in Texas as it would locally. Simcoe said unbeknownst to Sibley, Ballard and McKenna “had made arrangements to try to get the marijuana without paying for it.”
In the ensuing struggle, McKenna allegedly pistol-whipped Huntington before shooting and killing him.
