Middletown man sentenced for fatal hit and run

Questioning his claim that he was remorseful, a Lebanon County judge on Wednesday sentenced a Middletown man to state prison for 38 months to 12 years for a hit-and-run accident that killed a Palmyra woman last fall.

Collins was sentenced to three to 10 years on the charge of accidents involving death or personal injury and an additional two months to two years for the charge of tampering with evidence. The prison sentence was part of a plea agreement, with the sentencing judge deciding whether the counts be served concurrently or consecutively.

“I don’t buy that you’re remorseful,” Jones told Collins before sentencing him. The judge said he believed the only thing that upset Collins was getting caught.

Thomas’ husband, Gerald, said he was angry at Collins for hitting and killing his wife and the Palmyra police for not filing more charges against Collins.

Thomas’ husband also took issue with an apology letter that Collins wrote to him, noting that Collins included the wrong date of the accident.

He said he no longer has a wife to share graduations or grandchildren.
