Fears mount for missing teacher
"San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department officials continue to search for a local teacher reported missing over Halloween weekend.

Christina Bastian, 34, of Apple Valley, was reported missing by her family Sunday, Sheriff's Sgt. Marie Spain told the Daily Press on Tuesday. Bastian was last seen at a friend's house early Saturday morning, according to her mother, Cheryl Denny.

Bastian was reported to have left with some personal items and her dog Coco, described as a small, white and tan Maltipoo, officials and family said. Several of her belongings were reportedly found dumped on Highway 247 near Lucerne Valley."

She believes the attempted break in sparked what she felt was abnormal behavior in her daughter who was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder about 10 years ago. She said she took medication for several years, which was effective in her treatment until a few of months ago when she decided to stop. With her doctor’s help she discontinued the use of her prescription medication.

“After the break in, it was like it sent her into an episode causing her to become increasingly paranoid,”said Denny. Bastian’s mother said that she took a few days off of work last week because she was not feeling well, but planned to return this week.

Denny, the senior pastor at Apple Valley Faith Center said that she last saw her daughter on Saturday, October 31st at her church Harvest Festival. She said that after her daughter left she planned on spending the night at a friend’s home. Her friend called Denny at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 1st saying that Bastain had left her home.

Poor girl :(

Running over her phone due to paranoia, drive to Arizona and back for part of a day, etc. (and that drive would have been minus a phone)

Bastian had recently been the victim of a break-in early last Thursday at her Laguna Road apartment in Apple Valley. Bastian exhibited increasingly erratic behavior after the incident, Denny said.

"She was very scared and did not want to go back to the apartment," Denny said. "She could not sleep and seemed to become paranoid."

The paranoia increased to the point that Bastian ran over her cell phone shortly before she went missing. Denny said she believed her daughter was in the midst of a "manic episode" due to the odd behavior she exhibited when last seen.

"It was like she knew something was going on and was trying to figure out how to feel better," Denny said.

The bizarre behavior continued over the weekend. Denny said the day before her daughter went missing, she drove to Phoenix and then back home to Apple Valley.

Her vehicle, a Dodge Ram pickup truck purchased the previous week, was found around 7 p.m. Sunday on Highway 62 and Hess Boulevard in Morongo Valley. The truck had scratches and dents on both sides, as if it was driven over rough desert terrain.

Bastian is an English teacher at Silverado High School and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder about 10 years ago. She was reported to be stable since the initial diagnosis and was taking medication for the condition up until three months ago.

Bastian has very poor vision and can only see about six feet in front of her without glasses or contacts. Those items along with her purse and driver's license were left behind when she left Apple Valley.

idk. I think if she caused herself harm, she wouldn't be far from the vehicle. maybe foul play and she is in desert? she was vulnerable by herself, but then again she was very unstable too.
I wish mentally ill ppl wouldn't stop taking their meds. they always "feel better" and stop and usually a bad episode happens.

So no longer has her vehicle, cell phone or any other items. This sounds like a bad ending, hope I am wrong.

Such a sad case. I think at times people become frustrated and tired of taking meds on a regular basis. Especially when you feel back to your normal self. You don't want to be taking meds for life.
Ugh, poor girl. I do hope she's found safe. However it doesn't seem likely.
MOO

If she is found safe...wonder how it will be for her that it is now known she has bi-polar disorder, especially as a teacher. Jmo

Really? Why would it matter that she is bipolar? Why would people care? Why does mental illness have to be kept a secret? What does her having an illness have anything to do with her being a teacher?

It's that kind of ignorance that perpetuates the fear people have of the mentally ill.

However, Apple Valley Sheriff's Sgt. Marie Spain told the Daily Press a person reportedly found items believed to belong to Bastian in Apple Valley Wednesday morning.
"A (man) called us around 8:30 a.m. and said he lived off Chipmunk Road near Bear Valley and Central Roads," Spain said. "He found a bag with stuff inside it that led him to believe it belonged to Bastian."
Two detectives responded to the call and an aerial search of the area was conducted, Spain said, but have yet to find any more leads into Bastian's disappearance. A Sheriff's bloodhound was also requested to comb the area, Spain said.

This was today.

=( I am so very glad the dog was found (I do rescue so am always concerned for the pets) but don't have much hope she will be found safe. Also now doubting this was voluntary.

The articles explain that she quit taking her meds UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF HER DOCTOR (i am re-wording I think but that's the gist). Wonder why her doc was weaning her off meds - it doesn't say she was switching meds, just that she recently stopped taking them.

My refrain: Mental illness... when will we take it seriously and stop the shaming. Christina, I am sad that you were struggling. Just sad story all around of course.

A driver found Coco later that morning on the side of the road near the intersection of Bear Valley Road and Highway 18. The family had no idea Coco had been found until Monday night when a friend spotted a picture of the pooch on a website for lost dogs. Denny said she will be reunited Wednesday with Coco, who she said makes her feel closer to her daughter. “Just gave me a little more hope.”

Later that day on Nov.1, San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies located Bastian’s damaged Dodge Ram pickup truck abandoned near Valley View Road and Twentynine Palms Highway in Morongo Valley. On the same day, Bastian’s belongings, including her guitar, jewelry boxes and photographs, were found strewn along a highway in Johnson Valley.
