CA - El Dorado Co., Skull found at Browns Ravine, Folsom Lake, Nov'15

    http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/cri...e44752794.html

Forensic experts from El Dorado County are investigating human skeletal remains found Thursday night along the water’s edge of Folsom Lake.
Experts are on-site trying to determine whether the remains are those of a recently deceased person, or someone who died years ago.
Rich Preston, California State Parks superintendent for the Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, said the report of the finding came in Thursday around 9 p.m. The remains were spotted in the Brown’s Ravine area, near the Red Banks historic town site, an area that was once hidden underwater.
Preston noted that the extremely low level of the lake, due to drought, played a role in the discovery of the remains.
Experts from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department and coroner’s office are investigating.

Teddy Morris missing 1991. But "Teddy was last seen alive in Barstow on or near 07/26/1991. Information has been obtained that Teddy was murdered and his body was thrown in a mine shaft. "
And google isn't helping me with the distance but Teddys NAMUS DNA listing says Status: Initial inquiry underway which I don't think I have seen before?

    EDIT- Distance seems pretty fair.

His nickname was Ted and he disappeared in CA (though several counties away) in 2000, which is recent enough to have owned a cell phone and a price club card:

This article states they are not sure if the cell phone is related (card might not be either). It was posted on other thread http://www.sacbee.com/news/local/cri...e44752794.html

Here's 1 that disappeared in Folsom and was supposed to have been shot and killed off Praire City Road, which on the map is not far from the lake. www.doenetwork.org/cases/1543dmca.html

Hah! You found him! I was looking for him too. Yes, Prairie City Road is only about 6-7 miles south of the southern shore of Folsom Lake, via any of several direct routes. I'm not sure where exactly the remains were found so it could be farther than that. But I doubt if it's more than 20-30 minutes all the way to the north end. (Son lives in the area and I've visited the lake a couple of times. Beautiful place.)

ETA: The remains were apparently found near Brown's Ravine, on the east side of the lake. From the intersection of Prairie City Road and Route 50, that's about 8 miles according to Googlemaps: https://goo.gl/maps/gapEQhWs27n

Route 50 continues east over the mountains to South Lake Tahoe and eventually Carson City NV. In the other direction, it goes to Sacramento. So lots of places somebody could have come from.

Brown's Ravine is also the location of a town that was flooded by Lake Folsom when the dam was built, so it's possible it's remains washed out of an existing grave, or something like that.

And there are apparently quite a few people who have drowned in boating and fishing accidents over the years and not been recovered.

A mother and son found a human skull in the Browns Ravine/Hobie Cove area of Folsom Lake Thursday evening.
El Dorado County sheriff’s investigators responded to the scene.
“(Investigators) are thinking that the body could be 10 to 15 years old (in the water, not the person’s age). The victim could have drowned from a boat accident … suicide, a missing person. It could be a number of things,” El Dorado County sheriff’s Lt. Tom Murdoch told the Mountain Democrat. “We have contacted the Chico State Anthropology Department, which is currently assisting us in our investigation along with State Parks. The Federal Bureau of Reclamation was also out at the site to determine whether the remains were Native American, which they are not.
“A cell phone covered in dirt and algae was also found with the remains,” he added. It has not yet been determined if the phone is connected to the remains found. “The teeth were intact inside the skull, which means you can ID the victim from the dental records.”
“The depth of the lake right now is 350.6 feet, the maximum capacity is 466 feet,” said Rich Parsons with California State Parks. “State Parks handles issues at Folsom Lake, but any fatalities is a coroner’s issue and we get the sheriff’s department involved.”
This recent find isn’t the only mystery Folsom Lake has hidden for years. A plane accident in the late 1960s claimed the lives of three people, according to Parsons, but only one body was recovered.
“We have a general idea of where it is, at the deepest part of the lake, but it is unsafe for divers,” Parsons explained.
Browns Ravine and Hobie Cove remain open to the public.

    From January:

    http://www.villagelife.com/news/anot...t-folsom-lake/

Experts initially determined that the skull is not that of a Native American and detectives said it likely was deposited 10 to 15 years ago. However, Murdoch said Tuesday that the skull “may be a little older” than originally thought.

The lieutenant said Chico had said results could be forthcoming from their analysis in two to three weeks, but “it is taking longer”...

Some teeth remain intact in the artifact, which could lead to an identification based on dental work.
But not as old as the 1960s plane crash, mentioned further down.
