Arrest made in 30-year-old California murder cold case
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Authorities have arrested a 67-year-old man for the sexual assault and murder of a San Francisco teenager whose body was found buried on a beach some 30 years ago, officials said on Wednesday.

John Joseph Scott was arrested in Topock, Arizona, on Monday after the cold case was reopened earlier this year and DNA evidence from the scene matched his, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

The statement said Scott had long been suspected of murdering 19-year-old Sharon Ray, whose partially buried body was discovered by sightseers at Pescadero State Beach, some 45 miles south of San Francisco, on Oct. 30, 1983...

SAN FRANCISCO - A man arrested for a second time for the sexual assault and murder of a San Francisco teenager found buried on a beach in 1983 has been cleared of all charges.

San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe said the charges against John Joseph Scott were dropped on Thursday and he was released from custody.

"We have now concluded that the evidence does not support that he is the killer of this young woman," Wagstaffe said.

Two sightseers found Sharon Ray partially buried in the sand at Pescadero State Beach on Oct. 30, 1983. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators determined that Scott, who was 35 years old at the time, was the last person seen with Ray in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco. He was arrested as a suspect in her murder but later released because there was insufficient evidence to prosecute him at the time, sheriff's officials said.

But after the case was reopened earlier this year, new analysis of DNA evidence implicated Scott as the person who sexually assaulted and killed Ray, sheriff's officials said.

Back in February investigators reopened the decades old murder case after the sheriff's office's forensic lab was able to analyze DNA found on Ray.

When the DNA evidence did not match any in a national database, investigators obtained Scott's DNA evidence from a Gatorade bottle. The evidence garnered a tentative positive match to the fluid found on Ray, according to prosecutors.
