"DOWNEY, Calif. (KABC) -- Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies are investigating the shooting death of a Downey police officer whose body was found in the west parking lot of the Downey Police Department Wednesday night.

Ricardo "Ricky" Galvez, 29, was found dead at the end of his shift in the 10900 block of Brookshire Avenue shortly after 11 p.m.

Lt. John Corina said at least two suspects walked up to the police officer as he sat in the driver's seat of his own vehicle and opened fire.

A fellow Downey police officer heard the gunshots and chased the suspects to the neighboring city of Montebello, where the suspects bailed on foot near Washington Boulevard and Carob Way."

Downey Officer Ricardo Galvez shot to death in botched robbery; 3 arrested. At a noon press conference, Sheriff’s Homicide Lt. John Corina said the two men and a 17-year-old boy arrested in connection with the shooting did not target Officer Ricardo Galvez because he was a policeman.

“They were out looking to rob someone,” he said. The suspects have not been named yet'

A 16-year-old Bellflower resident was charged Friday with murder in the shooting death of a Downey police officer during a botched robbery earlier this week, prosecutors said. ...

Charged as an adult. Well, poor kid. What was this officer doing wrong? Shot because he was dressed in civilian clothes (required by his job that evening) and not in uniform so these bums could tell that he was LE and would not have tried to rob him? Or not have shot him? Which?

Not much interest in this death, unless negative facts come out about the deceased Officer. Ah, ....

RIP Officer Galvez.

Knott, Alvarez and Diaz will return to court Feb. 5. If convicted, Knott and Alvarez could face the death penalty if prosecutors decide later to seek it. Diaz, because of his age, faces up to life in state prison if he is convicted as charged.

Prosecutors say 3 defendants engaged in crime spree prior to killing Downey police officer

http://www.presstelegram.com/general-news/20160802/prosecutors-say-3-defendants-engaged-in-crime-spree-prior-to-killing-downey-police-officer

Defendants already charged with murdering a Downey police officer Nov. 18 engaged in a crime spree of shooting and robbery prior to the shooting the same night, Los Angeles County prosecutors announced Tuesday.

New charges stemming from those crimes have been filed, and an attempted murder charge was filed against a fourth defendant, a woman said to be to the girlfriend of one of the men accused with killing Downey Police Officer Ricardo “Ricky” Galvez, 29. That charge stems from a separate crime alleged to have been committed last October at a Montebello convenience store, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.

Prosecutors have filed murder charges against Jeremy Anthony Alvarez, 21, of Montebello; Steven Knott, 18, of Montebello and Abel Diaz, 17, of Bellflower. The three have pleaded not guilty to the crimes.

Alvarez and Knott are eligible for the death penalty, if convicted. Diaz, a minor, faces life in prison.

The newly-announced fourth defendant, Rebecca Ann Ustrell, 28, of Montebello, herself faces life in prison if convicted of attempted murder.

Pair ordered to stand trial in death of Downey officer

Two reputed gang members were ordered Sept. 27 to stand trial on murder and attempted robbery charges in the killing of a Downey police officer who was shot once in the face while sitting in his BMW in a parking lot near the police station.

Superior Court Judge Roger Ito rejected requests from defense attorneys to dismiss the case against Steven Knott, 20, and his half-brother, Jeremy Anthony Alvarez, 23, who are charged, along with a third defendant, with the Nov. 18, 2015, slaying of Ricardo Galvez.

Prosecutors allege that the half-brothers went on a crime spree that fall that culminated with the officer’s murder.
