Case History:
17900 Black of Bass Creek Road Face Down ME DR REESE 5301 SW 31 AVE FT LAUD 305-962-8300DET G PIERS0N 305-431-4600 .

The man had been beaten severely and cut with a sharp weapon like a machete. The attack was so vicious, police said, the man`s jaw, several teeth, and an area under his nose had been sliced away. The cause of death was officially listed as multiple stab wounds.

Investigation of the one piece of evidence, a ring bearing the German word ``Kriegsgluck,`` also led detectives to a wall.

``Kriegsgluck means `war luck` in German and we believe the ring may be presented to German soldiers. But we`ve tried German-American clubs, German nationals living in this area, and we couldn`t learn anything,`` said Miramar Detective George Pierson.

Pierson admits that although the ring was found near the body, police cannot determine whether it belonged to the victim.

As a ``last ditch effort,`` a Broward Sheriff`s Office forensic artist made a facial reconstruction of the victim, molding features around a cast of the victim`s skull. Photographs of the reconstruction were distributed, but police have received no leads.

6 1/2 is very small for a man's ring. Are they sure he was wearing it?

Taken from the article posted above:

"Pierson admits that although the ring was found near the body, police cannot determine whether it belonged to the victim".

It sounds like the victim was not wearing the ring.

Yes, I don't ever see standard men's rings smaller than size 9 so this must have been a pinky ring if he was wearing it.

Maybe that ring was a family heirloom. A lady who served as a nurse perhaps. He could have been carrying it in his pocket.

A quick search on the internet suggests that the ring stems from the First World War and Austria. Apparently it was a patriotic sign you could buy to support the war. People were encouraged to donate their gold and other precious metals for the war effort.

oh that is Interesting. Maybe it belong to one of his parents or grandparents and he just kept it

Recap of this case:
There are no rule-outs listed on NamUs and the case hasn't been updated since it was entered in 2008: The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

Doe Network has more information listed and was updated in December 2020:
Date of Discovery: August 19, 1984
Location of Discovery: Miramar, Broward County, Florida
Estimated Date of Death: 7 months prior
State of Remains: Not recognizable - Near complete or complete skeleton
Cause of Death: Homicide
The skeletal remains were found under a yellow foam mattress. The body was unclad. A tattered, white blanket with blue, diamond-shaped designs and a ring (see photo) were found next to the body. A machete like instrument had repeatedly struck the victim.
Dentals: The Anthropologist feels the dental work may have been done in Europe, perhaps Germany. (Suggests either someone from Germany/Europe or possibly a US soldier who was stationed in Germany.)
No fingerprints or DNA on file.

Sun Sentinel article:
BONES, RING ONLY CLUES
On August 19, 1984 two men searching for snakes in a wooded area along Bass Creek Road in Miramar lifted up a mattress and found the skeleton of a murder victim. The victim remains unidentified. But through the work of specialists and scientists at the Smithsonian Institution, a number of questions have been answered.

  • From the recovered pile of bones, investigators were able to describe the victim as a young white male between 23 and 45 years old. He was of average height, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10.
  • The man had been beaten severely and cut with a sharp weapon like a machete. The attack was so vicious, police said, the man's jaw, several teeth, and an area under his nose had been sliced away. The cause of death was officially listed as multiple stab wounds.
  • Investigation of the one piece of evidence, a ring bearing the German word "Kriegsgluck," also led detectives to a wall. "Kriegsgluck means 'war luck' in German and we believe the ring may be presented to German soldiers. But we've tried German-American clubs, German nationals living in this area, and we couldn't learn anything," said Miramar Detective George Pierson. Pierson admits that although the ring was found near the body, police cannot determine whether it belonged to the victim.

Samuel Arthur Todd
Missing since January 1, 1984 from Manhattan, New York City, New York County, New York
Classification: Endangered Missing

Vital Statistics

    • Date Of Birth: June 12, 1959
    • Age at Time of Disappearance: 24 years old
    • Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 5'11; 135 pounds
    • Distinguishing Characteristics: White male. Light brown hair; blue eyes. Todd wears eyeglasses.
    • Medical Conditions: Todd may be suffering from amnesia and may not know who he is.
    • Marks, Scars: Two small scars on cheek near left eye.
    • Clothing: Last seen wearing a dark blue sweatshirt with a circular emblem of Ecolint Geneve
stitched across the front; blue jeans; blue running shoes; and dark-framed eyeglasses.
    • Dentals: Not available

Circumstances of Disappearance
Todd vanished after stepping out of a New Year's party for fresh air. He was last seen walking near Mulberry and Houston Streets in Manhattan, NY on New Year's Day 1984.
Sam left his wallet and jacket at the party. He had no cash and no identification on him.
Investigators believes Sam is suffering amnesia from a hit on the head. Several persons, including one at the city-operated Men's Shelter in the Bowery, claim they saw Sam wandering in the area after his disappearance. A worker at the Men's Shelter told police he saw Sam, lean and hungry, eating soup. A day later, someone spotted a a thin man with blond hair washing car windows on a street in Greenwich Village.
Todd was a clergy student at the time of his disappearance.

Todd attended an international school in Geneva, Switzerland and is a 1981 graduate of Vassar College, where he ran cross-country. He was a clergy student at Yale Divinity School at the time of his disappearance, and had passed the first round of qualifying exams for Presbyterian ordination. There were, however, some problems in Todd's life which may have caused him distress.

He had pre-registered for five courses for the spring semester, but he wasn't performing well academically; he had gotten incompletes in two courses he'd taken in the fall of 1983, and these incompletes would automatically become failures if his coursework wasn't completed by February 1984. Even if Todd was able to complete the classes, he still wasn't on track to graduate from Yale on time.

He was also suffering financial problems and had accepted financial assistance from relatives, and he was struggling to pay his tuition and his rent. He had ended his relationship with his girlfriend in the autumn of 1983. He had stated he planned to avoid his ex during the New Year celebrations, but she was at the party he attended that night.

Todd was interested in jazz music and in peace and justice issues in 1984, and he volunteered for several charities. He was born in New York City and lived all over the United States and in several foreign countries during his life.

In spite of Todd's difficulties, his family stated he was happy at the time of his disappearance, and they don't believe he would have ever left on his own. His case remains unsolved.

I can’t find if this guy has any rule outs? Does anyone know?

I went down the Kriegsglück rabbit hole for a bit. Just a few notes:
-Basic translation: "fortune of war", "luck of war" or "fate of war"
-It does not carry a special connotation in German, it simply means luck in war - a war developing favorably.
-No connection to the Nazis, the word was used long before they rose to power.
-The famous German poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote a poem titled "Kriegsglück"
-There is a Goethe museum and the Goethe House in Frankfort, Germany. Frankfurt Goethe-Museum and Goethe-House | Frankfurt Tourism
-The German edition of the card game Magic the Gathering, has a Kriegsglück card which may be translated as "fighting chance". (note the card game wasn't released until 1993, so it has no relevance to this case.)

I found no images or anything of a similar ring searching through historical documents and antique sites. Could it be that the ring is not an heirloom, but more of the "modern" souvenir, possibly from Frankfort and the Goethe Museum?
