I was asked by a detective with the Boston PD to do a facial reconstruction of this woman. Her body had been recently exhumed, but the skull was in a badly fragmented condition. I had to reconstruct the image of the skull using old photos from the crime scene before I could reconstruct a face on the skull. I also had to completely reconstruct the image on her shirt, as it was also in badly deteriorated condition.

Keep in mind that since this is based on skeletal remains, it will not be an exact likeness, but rather, a general depiction of her facial structure. Several strands of shoulder-length brown hair were recovered, but the exact style could not be determined. Fine details, such as her overall "look", her hairstyle, the shape of her eyes, lips, etc should not be seen as exact depictions.

Not mentioned in the NamUs casefile is her underclothing - a grey sports-style bra and thermal underclothing. So her death probably occurred in the fall or winter months.

Also, the body was found near a portion of the road where vehicles would not be able to easily park unnoticed by the park police who patrol the area. My own theory is that she was a jogger who was assaulted by someone hiding in the woods.

in jeans? maybe a walker.

but wouldn't someone have noticed her missing? maybe she was transient (not only homeless, maybe runaway or drifter)

I doubt she was a transient. The sports bra and jordache sneakers doesn't strike me as something that a transient typically wears. I noticed in one of the crime scene photos a small quantity of cash and a disposible cigarette lighter next to her body. So she may have been a smoker, though IDK if there is anything in the autopsy reports that indicates that.

https://www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/6340/7/ - Cathrine Malcolmson A bit older case than estimated. She's younger than the estimate too.

https://www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/23508/26/ - Sydney Montanez Not a lot of info to go on.

Will look for more later. Gotta make the kids dinner.

FWIW - I did a basic google search to research more about Sydney and found this which may rule out Sydney for the MA unid:

New Britain
October 16, 1999 (year obtained from year of published Police News article)

Sydney Montanez, 34, of 53 S. High St., New Britain; charged with possession of a narcotic, possession of drug paraphernalia and interfering with police.

This appears to me to be the same person.
Date last seen 1991 + 8 years matches the 1999 arrest
Age last seen 26 + 8 years matches the age 34 at time of arrest.
Same name.
Both from New Britain (under Circumstances in Namus).

I sent an e-mail to the Namus contact person to see if this is one and the same person and whether or not NAMUS needs to be updated with a new missing date or perhaps SM is no longer missing. Will keep you posted.

Nice recon, Carl.

I also highly doubt that she was a jogger. I don't know any joggers who would wear jeans and long underwear to run in. I don't necessarily think she was homeless either, but I wouldn't rule that out based on the "designer" sneakers. Jordache sneakers weren't especially expensive or fancy, IIRC. In fact, according to Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordache

In the 1980s, the company expanded its reach with expansive licensing that generated up to $300 million per year in wholesale sales.[1] In 1989, the company had 100 licensees, manufacturing products as varied as children's socks, women's outerwear, jewelry, dresses, luggage, and umbrellas.[1]

In the 1990s, this strategy appeared to have backfired, and Jordache products slid in popularity. The company's jeans "lost their cachet, appealing mainly to inner-city youths and blue-collar workers and typically selling at discount stores."[1] When Jordache designer diapers were manufactured by a licensee in 1994, they "seemed to symbolize Jordache's descent in the marketplace to mass-merchandise stores and discount outlets."

We all know that Massachusetts is rather abysmal at keeping a good list of missing persons, which makes finding possible matches more difficult. Here's some info on the area where she was found:

She could have been just walking or hanging out with someone and killed near or at where she was found—no vehicle needed. I'm somewhat familiar with this area; it is not unlike a similar park closer to my home, which I sometimes walk in. There are all sorts of people in these types of parks; they aren't necessarily there to exercise. Some people are just walking and talking with friends, hanging out, etc. And you can bet that plenty of people are in the area at night, as well, police patrol or not. It would be very easy to go off a path and into the woods unnoticed to sit, have a smoke, whatever.

I was a long distance runner in high school, and I don't know anyone who would jog in jeans. Not only would they be uncomfortable, but you have the issues with sweat and chaffing.

Where I live, parks are also patrolled by some form of park police but come dusk they usually lock the gate and go home. Sometimes people will sneak into the park after hours to hang out/party/etc. Or maybe she cut across the park as a shortcut to get home and was attacked.

UPDATE:

I received two e-mails this morning from the NAMUS contact person re: my inquiry!

1) Yes I am the correct person and that article is definitely interesting. The date is NamUs is correct based on the law enforcement report and it is still an open case but I will check into this person arrested in 1999 to see what is going on.

2) The Sydney arrested in 1999 is not the Sydney that we have missing…our missing Sydney was last seen in 1991.

As a result of the reply from NAMUS contact, it appears that Sydney M last seen in 1991 is still missing and should still be considered/discussed as a potential match for this UNID from MA.

I'm not sure if Stony Brook Reservation has gates. Even if it does, it borders public roads and would be very easy to get into by foot, day or night. There are not big fences around it or anything. Regarding Carl's comment that it would be very difficult to dump a body here from a vehicle, there's a very sad case where a woman was kidnapped and murdered just a few years ago and her body was left on a bike path in the park. (She was forced to drive to the park and he killed her there.):

I contacted two people on Facebook with the last name Montanez from New Britain, CT. To see if they are related and maybe they have pictures of her.

You're awesome!

I don't think this is Marilyn. She is widely believed to have been a victim of the New Bedford serial killer, who was operating in that area then.

I saw that. However, this body was found only about an hour north of New Bedford, and not ridiculously far from 95. I figured it was worth checking out. I'd also check out Christina Monteiro against this UID https://www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/7827/0/
Unfortunately it doesn't look like she has dentals in names yet, no DNA, and no fingerprints. :(

More about Stony Brook Reservation, where she was found:

http://www.mass.gov/eea/agencies/dcr/massparks/region-boston/stony-brook-reservation.html

Turtle Pond Parkway and Enneking Parkway are the main routes to and through the reservation.
Here's a map: http://www.mass.gov/eea/images/dcr/parks/trailmaps/stony.gif

The intersection of Turtle Pond and Enneking is kind of toward the south end, just north of where the park splits into two branches. Note that there are walking trails and paved biking trails near where she was found, and a parking lot not very far south. The eastern branch of the park has a lot of facilities like ball fields etc. but they aren't very near where she was found.

The park is on the borders of Roxbury and Hyde Park, both parts of Boston, and Dedham, which is its own town.

She is far from the only body to be found in Stony Brook Reservation...though she might be the only unidentified one.

I would be quite surprised if she's from eastern MA and was reported missing. Boston LE's not always helpful but they're generally though not always pretty competent. They might not go the extra mile but they probably did the obvious searches (and just because DNA etc. aren't listed in a public place like Namus doesn't mean they don't have them and they may be in CODIS as well. They exhumed her a year and a half ago and expected results within a few months.).

It's pretty common for people who get themselves murdered in RI, Connecticut, and southern MA (New Bedford) to wind up dumped in the southern part of Boston--here, the Blue Hills, the driveways of industrial parks--anywhere it's dark and treed enough to give a few minutes of cover.

I think the timeline's way too long to make Monteiro or Roberts very likely; they estimate the time of death at 1993-1994. But we've seen some of those estimates be way off and Roberts was even wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and sneakers when she disappeared, so that does seem to make her a possibility.

Montero is also showing that she went missing wearing a t shirt, jeans, and sneakers. Malcolmson was wearing a stripped shirt, blue pants, and sneakers. I'm just trying to find women who seem to be a reasonably close match and in close geographic and time proximity. I assume that these women haven't been ruled out until notified otherwise. :)
