Italy - Richard Nolan Gonsalves, 33, Camino al Tagliamento, 18 July 1999

No escape. The hand that in July 1999, in Camino al Tagliamento, poured a powerful rat poison (thallium sulfate) in a bottle of beer then drink by the US architect Richard Nolan Gonsalves certainly did not go for the subtle inserted in fact 18 grams of poison, 7 of which they were on the bottom of the bottle, while the other 11 were then ingested by the imperceptive American along with the beer. A death sentence: the amount of thallium drunk architect was in fact ten times the lethal dose for humans. Gonsalves, 33, died at the hospital in Udine in the space of two days, at 20:50 of the July 18, 1999, in agony.
All that dramatic story will remain shrouded in mystery. In criminal fact it was not found guilty of the poisoning. And more recently in the civil proceedings brought by the family Gonsalves against the hospital of Udine we have concluded that regardless of the effectiveness of care implemented by health Richard Nolan Gonsalves could not have been saved: the dose of poison was so strong nip anyone. No therapy is therefore served.
So close game. The family Gonsalves was seen reject a request for compensation for moral damage, biological and existential advanced to the Company University Hospital of Udine which together amounted to about one and a half million Euros. The parents of the victim - University professor Robert Gonsalves and his wife Pat - were in fact convinced that the care given by doctors had not been effective, even superficial.
According to family members the symptoms were underestimated, so that the architect was discharged after a first series of investigations which may not spotted the cause of illnesses warned at the beginning of the painful course. And even when Gonsalves returned to the hospital after a few hours in the grip of pain diagnoses would not be effective and timely, according to the family.
On this point, the Civil Court of Udine has made inquiries through an expert witness given to Professor Piero Fiorentini, which was later integrated into the hearing. And there have been notes to the behavior of the doctors.
"The conclusion - writes Paul Petoello civil court in the written civil judgment - was that there was imprudence and / or incompetence on the part of doctors at the hospital in Udine, but the health of emergency has underestimated the element of 'ingestion of toxic substances with the drink and consequently did not use all the resources to make a targeted therapy that effect: behavior therefore not quite diligent, understanding that even if the approach was perfect result, it would not be worth saving the patient's life. "
This is the decisive point of the civil case. It lacks the so-called "causal link" between the negligence of the hospital and the patient's death.
The story of Richard Nolan Gonsalves is definitely in store. Despite the lack of a guilty and compensation for the death of his son, Robert Gonsalves and his wife - present at all hearings of the trial - they still thanked the judge Petoello (recently deceased) for the attention and sensibility demonstrated throughout the path of the cause.
Gonsalves family was represented by Fabrizio and Marco Vismara Paglionico; the University Hospital "Santa Maria della Misericordia" by lawyers and Marco Susanna Errera Marpillero; Fondiaria Sai SpA Advocate Francesca Casolino.

In any case, the mystery remains: who and why he entered the thallium sulfate in beer then killed the American architect?
