North Wales Police hoped the new images would help trigger someone’s memory and lead to the man being identified nearly a year after his skeletal remains were found in Clocaenog Forest, Wales.

Detectives believe he was murdered after being struck on the head at another location and then taken to the woods between 1995 and 2005.

Brothers Andrew and Mark Middle found the body while camping last November.

‘I found some bones on the floor and on closer inspection I realised they were actually human remains,’ Mark said.

Given that this chap was only a few years older than most of Moore's known victims, and the unlikelihood of another killer choosing to bury this body in roughly the same place as another Moore victim and at roughly the same time as Moore was killing, the most obvious explanation is that he is an unknown victim of Moore's.

However Moore has been locked up since 1996, so if it was one of his victims he was either buried earlier than the police estimate or he was buried very shortly before Moore was arrested.

I just wish that I could find decent info about MPs and UIDs outside of the USA -- it's so hard for me to find any info TBH. And that makes searching for possible matches for this guy really hard.

A mans body was found by a spectator at Wales Rally GB on 14th November 2015, close to one of the Clocaenog sections of the rally near Pentre-llyn- Cymmer.

Forensic tests revealed the man was murdered but he has never been identified.

North Wales Police have had a facial reconstruction completed to produce an image of what the man could have looked like.
Detective Superintendent Iestyn Davies said:

Despite not knowing his identity we have been able to establish that he was born prior to 1950, he was well built and around 5’9 ½” tall.
He had a number of crowns to his front teeth and it is likely that he suffered with lower back pain & stiffness.
We believe that he was killed between 2004 and 2010 but we are keeping an open mind about these dates.

I would guess that his being born before 1950 has been determined by a lack of radioactive isotopes in his bones.

If the police estimate of his date of death is correct, then he cannot have been a victim of Peter Moore, but they do seem to be keeping an open mind about that date. It's also possible that he was dumped there by his killer because Peter Moore had previously dumped a victim in the forest and therefore he hoped this man would be assumed to be another victim of Moore.

I wonder how close this body was to that of Edward Carthy, the victim Moore is known to have dumped in the forest.

Fractured nose: maybe an ex-boxer, or someone engaged in illegal activities?

Boxing is a possibility. Heck, riding a horse with a tendency to rear, jumping horses over big fences, either can break the rider's nose. (Mine's merely been bloodied.)

In this area, are horses common?

Date found: 14 November 2015
Gender: male

Age range: 54 - 100
Ethnicity: unknown
Height: 173cm - 180cm (5ft 8in - 5ft 10.5in)
Build:stocky

Hair: unknown
Facial hair: unknown
Eye colour: unknown
Body or remains: remains

Circumstances
The skeletal remains of a male were discovered at Clocaenog Forest, near Corwen, Denbighshire. It is believed the body has been at the location for a number of years. He is believed to have been over 54 years of age at the time of his death, most likely in his 60s, and was born before 1950.

Dentistry shows work typical of that carried out in the UK between 1980 and 2000, and he suffered from both athritis and an inflammatory joint condition, which affected his back and a number of other joints. This would likely have given him pain and reduced movement. He had previously suffered an injury to his spine, a broken nose and possibly an injury to his left wrist.

Images have been produced to show what it is believed he may have looked like aged 50 , 60 and 70 (third image). A badly decomposed pair of Marks and Spencer underpants and dark green Pringle jumper were recovered close to the remains. They may have belonged to the individual, although this cannot be confirmed.

Distinguishing features
Peculiarity - unspecified - back - Injury to spine in mid/lower back, and experienced inflammatory joint condition.

Peculiarity - broken nose - nose

Clothing
underwear - underpants - maroon - plain - Large, classic briefs from Marks and Spencer, 36"-39" waist

jumper - v neck - green - plain - Dark Green, XL Pringle Jumper

Clocaenog Forest Man

Discovery of the body

The remains were found on the evening of 14 November 2015 by two brothers. Andrew and Mark Middle were camping in Cloceanog Forest during the 2015 Wales Rally GB which they were spectating. It was dark and Mark was using a torch to look for firewood in the woods when he found a skull on the forest floor and after a closer inspection realised it was human. The skull was covered in moss and was largely concealed by the undergrowth. North Wales Police were notified of the discovery at 20:35. A local officer attended the scene and concluded that the brothers had found the fully decomposed remains of a human male.

Based on tree growth, body decomposition and the fact that the area of the forest where the victim was found was planted in 1985, the police believe that the body was deposited between 1995 and 2005.

The remains were found close to one of the Clocaenog sections of the rally and near to Pentre-llyn-Cymmer and Llyn Brenig. The deposition location of the body was easily accessible as it was only few metres from two forest roads. The location of the discovery was known to be near to the murder and burial location of Edward Carthy, who, at 28, was the youngest victim of serial killer Peter Moore.
---
Initial investigation

After the discovery, the police started a large-scale search of the forest which took five weeks. The police uncovered an almost entire skeleton of a human male. The majority of the skeleton was discovered beneath in dense trees and undergrowth a few metres away from the location of the skull. The remains were removed two days after the discovery and taken away to be examined by a pathologist.
---
Description of the victim

It is likely that the man would have been born before 1950 and aged over 54 at the time of his death and most likely in his 60s. He would have been 'well-built' in life and would have had a height of between 5ft 8in and 5ft 10.5in (1.73–1.78m).
---
The victim had lost a number of teeth during life which would have resulted in sunken cheeks. All the victim's posterior molar teeth were absent which suggests that he was not dentally-aware early in his life; however, this appeared to be followed by a sudden change of circumstance due to extensive dental work of very high quality completed later in life. Police stated that the victim had undergone two identifiable dental procedures in life. The first was that the victim had a number of crowns to his front teeth, work which appeared to have been done in the UK between 1980 and 2000. The second procedure was an uncommon procedure: a remedial filling to a temporary plastic crown which had been badly worn. John Rosie, a forensic odontologist, stated that, as the dental work was highly distinctive and involved specialist work, it could allow a dentist to identify the victim. Information regarding the victim's dental work was published in dentistry journals by the police.

Some items of clothing were found near to the body but it could not be confirmed that they were associated with the victim. These items were: a dark green Pringle jumper and some dark red decomposed Marks and Spencer underwear. The underwear was manufactured in 1999 and Pringle of Scotland confirmed that the jumper was produced between 2000 and 2004.
---
Subsequent investigations

In June 2016, the police released a photograph of the victim's jawbone in the hope that dentists may recognise their dental work and therefore identify the victim. The police also announced that they were undertaking familial DNA research.
---
in March 2017, the police confirmed that they had been contacted by, and met with, serial killer Peter Moore following his claims that he knew the identity of Clocaenog Forest Man. Moore claimed in a letter that the victim was a mature student at Aberystwyth University who had disappeared in 1996. Moore did not disclose the victim's name but Daily Post journalists identified a Roger Evans of Bradeley near Stoke-on-Trent who disappeared on 16 January 1996, aged 46, during his first year at Aberystwyth University. Moore later stated that his theory had been discounted by the police due to conflicting dates.

PS: Adding link to Roger Evans case for those who are curious- The Doe Network: Case File 2311DMUK . While location seems to be close, he does seem to be youngish compared to this John Doe.

Here are details of some unsolved crimes in North Wales and this crime is featured:

The North Wales murder cases that have never been solved:

The remains of the man found in Clocaenog Forest are likely to have been left there sometime between 2004 and 2010.

Detectives found fabric from a green Pringle jumper sold between 2000 and 2004 and a label for Marks & Spencer underwear from 1999 to 2000 near the site.

The remains were found in October 2015 during a Wales GB Rally Stage when a spectator discovered part of a skull.

North Wales Police launched a large scale forensic search around the forest and were able to recover virtually an entire male skeleton.

Tests on the skeleton and skull have produced a DNA profile.

A post-mortem examination discovered he had been murdered by blunt trauma to the skull, and examinations of his teeth and specialist radio carbon dating found the man was born before 1950.

Forensic odontologists found he had had specialist dental work at some point in his life and detectives had hoped the highly distinctive nature of the work could have helped identify him.

Believed to be between 5ft 8in and 5ft 11in tall the man had also suffered from arthritis and had an issue with his spine which would have caused “limited mobility”.

But despite repeated appeals, the man has never been identified.

Icy confession of serial killer who slaughtered victims for 'fun'
''Moore, whose family moved to North Wales when he was a boy, owned a chain of cinemas and appeared to be a successful and colourful businessman to his neighbours and friends in Kinmel Bay, St Asaph.

But below the surface, the 56-year-old was a dangerous sadist who had been launching brutal, but non-fatal, attacks on men across Merseyside and Wales for almost 20 years before his killing spree began.

Now former solicitor Dylan Jones has shared chilling details of the case in his new book, The Man in Black - Peter Moore - Wales' Worst Serial Killer, due to be published to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the murders.''

''During his confession, Moore admitted to attacking "many men" in the Conwy Valley over a period of 20 years before the murders started.''

''Moore was jailed for life with no prospect of release, and remains in HMP Wakefield, on a wing which has been home to serial killers including 'Dr Death' Harold Shipman and child murderers Ian Huntley and Mark Bridger''.
