The disappearance of Trevor Deely.
Trevor Deely vanished from the streets of Dublin in the early hours of December 8th, 2000,
at the age of 22. No trace has ever been found of him.

I couldn't find a thread for Trevor on here so I thought I would start one.

I only learnt of this case last week from a show about cold cases.

Trevor was last seen in the early morning hours of 8 Dec 2000 in Dublin walking home after an office Christmas party. He has never been heard from again and multiple searches have turned up no clues.

The show this case was featured on was Donal McIntyre's Unsolved (I will try to find a link). What I found most interesting was the CCTV footage of the man following Trevor quite closely as he was walking home. He was also spotted on CCTV talking to an unknown man outside his office building. I believe Trevor was not involved in an accident and was a victim of foul play but would be good to get some sleuthing done on this case.

I just saw the Unsolved episode as well. I was intrigued about his recent trip to Alaska, visiting a girl he liked? They briefly mention that they don't know if he had gone invited or uninvited? But then they didn't mention that particular topic again in the episode. Was his passport left at home I wonder?

It's interesting that the expert is stating that if Trevor was in water, the phone would have been dead in seconds and yet it was ringing 4 times, when his sister rang the number over the weekend. It's such a strange case, with so many unanswered whys, especially checking his computer, and the phone call to his friend. Really interesting CCTV footage. The body language suggests the guy outside was an acquaintance. Perhaps this was a person who regularly visited the office.
I'm sure there are lots of theories out there, but I get the feeling that returning to an office to get an umbrella and have a cup of coffee is about the lamest excuse for a rainy night after a work Christmas party...
Trevor may have inserted himself into a domestic situation, being an unaware third party. Just MHO.
 
I think this cctv man may have been skulking around and reaslises the building belongs to a bank so thinks there is actual money in it. So perhaps he hung around to mug TD to get his keys.

I watched a TV programme about this case about a year ago. A few details struck me - they said it was a weekend where lots of people were out at Christmas parties, it was bad (rainy) weather and there was a cab strike. It sounds to me like a perfect recipe to have lots of drunk drivers on the roads. Add to that, the fact that Trevor was intoxicated and wearing dark clothing...

I think its very possible that he was knocked down by a drunk driver who put Trevor's body in his car (possibly with the help of a passenger in the car), and they just got lucky that nobody spotted them.

The problem with the above theory is when cases get resolved we never find out that that's the reason the person went missing iykwim.
I think if somebody callously hits somebody while drunk they normally always just hit and run not stop and shove the person in the boot imo.

Drunk drivers tend to just drive off. I can't think of a case where a drunk driver has moved a body and hidden it.

Also he vanished in inner city Dublin. A drunk driver might hit someone on a country road perhaps but it's highly unlikely in a built up area. Trevor is clearly seen walking on the pavement on cctv and the area he was last seen is very pedestrian friendly. I really can't see him being hit by a car on the way home.


I think if Trevor is found in this search it would be linked to the fact that he worked for an asset management bank and something gangstery went down. Not saying he was involved in anything dodgy just some career criminals got a hold of him to extort information and it all went wrong.

Answering my own question with a thought that popped into my head. Gardai said this search is not related to the appeal in April. This means someone didn't phone in recently with a tip off of this location.

I think it could be possible that Gardai were able to get hold of phone data from the time and painstakingly analysed it and this was what led them to Chapelizod. They have a fantastic technical bureau who have worked wonders in the past with mobile phone evidence.

Interesting theory. Surely the Gardai would have checked those by now though?
The times reckons its a tip off, somebody claims he was buried there by a criminal gang he met by chance that night.

He said that this information was not related to the appeal about the CCTV footage in April. He described it as the most significant search operation to be carried out since Trevor’s disappearance.
Costello said he could not discuss the nature of the information which led gardaí to the search in Chapelizod.
