Unfortunately the accused was out on bail from charges this summer. These deaths could have been avoided. Very heartbreaking. RIP Amber and Jody

Two life sentences for 2015 murders

    http://www.dailyheraldtribune.com/20...r-2015-murders

Mark Phillips, 28, was sentenced Tuesday in Court of Queen’s Bench to two back-to-back life sentences for the 2015 murders of Amber Dawn Diebert, 24, and Jody Michelle Topilko, 30.

Phillips pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder on the first day in the second week of his preliminary hearing in Grande Prairie. There were still two more weeks scheduled for the hearing, and evidence yet to be shown, but discussions over the weekend led to the plea, said Crown counsel Photini Papadatou.

Family members of the victims sat feet away from Phillips as he stood to give his guilty plea. Justice Shelley later delivered the sentence, a joint request from the Crown and defence. He will have no chance of parole for 30 years.
Papadatou suggested Phillips hadn’t stated a motive for the murders. “The elephant in the room is the why,” she said. “Only Mr. Phillips can tell us that.”

Numerous victim impact statements from family members, which were read in court, described how their lives had been shattered by the murders.

Phillips told the court he was sorry.
