16-Year-Old Exchange Student Slashed in Face on Way to School by Attacker in Surgical Gear: Police

A 16-year-old Chinese exchange student was slashed in the face with a box cutter by a man wearing a surgical mask and gloves Wednesday as she walked to school in Queens, New York, authorities say.

The suspect sneaked up behind the victim as she walked east on 13th Avenue near 147th Street around 8:20 a.m. and slashed her twice in the face; one laceration ran from her ear to her throat, authorities said.

Surveillance video shows the suspect jogging behind the victim as she walks on the sidewalk. Both the suspect and victim move out of the frame for a moment, and then the video shows the suspect fleeing in the other direction.

Investigators believe the assailant, who was caught on a neighbor’s surveillance video is young in his 20s, and do not suspect it’s a fellow student.

“But it’s difficult to tell because of the mask,” said Boyce. “We do believe it’s a young person. You saw the gait as he ran away, pretty pronounced, pretty fast.”

Unless he's hunch backed it seems like he has something tucked under his jacket around his neck that could possibly be dreadlocks. He doesn't seem to be wearing a hooded sweatshirt but more like a ski jacket with vent holes on the side, and there seems to be blood or some pink stain on one side. Could it be the same guy on a spree of sorts? Has that possibility been eliminated?

Police said the subway slashing was not related to another slashing incident in Whitestone, Queens on Wednesday, which left a 16-year-old girl wounded.
