A former Northwest suburban attorney, school board member and Hoffman Estates plan commissioner was arrested in Texas Thursday and is being charged with murder in connection with the 1973 death of his wife in Barrington Township, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office said Friday.

Donnie Rudd, 73, who was arrested in Sugar Land, Texas, also is a suspect in a 1991 murder of an Arlington Heights woman [Loretta "Teri" Tabak, a 59-year-old interior designer who was shot several times in the head in her Arlington Heights condominium], police said.

Rudd is being charged with the murder of his wife, Noreen Kumeta Rudd, who was a librarian at Quaker Oats in Barrington. She was 19 when she was reported killed in a car accident, but authorities now believe the car accident was faked to cover up her murder.[/QUOTE]

A Cook County judge denied bond Monday for Donnie Rudd, the Texas man charged with killing his teen bride in a Chicago suburb more than 40 years ago.

Rudd's lawyer appeared in court Monday morning for his client, who remains hospitalized under police guard with a leg circulation ailment that makes it hard for him to walk...

Prosecutors accused Rudd of beating his young wife to death just 27 days after they were married and staging a car accident to cover it up for the insurance money.

"The victim and the defendant would have had to be married in order for him to be the beneficiary on these payouts. Nineteen-year-old Noreen Rudd had taken out the maximum policy of $100,000," said Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Maria McCarthy.

Once a prominent lawyer who in the early 1970s served on the board of Schaumburg-based School District 54, Rudd was disbarred in 1994, and authorities said he left Illinois for Texas more than 20 years ago. A website in his name claims he's an accomplished scientist who specializes in stem cell technology. Rudd has been married at least six times, including twice to the same woman, public records showed.

His fifth wife, Emma Leising, told the Tribune she ended their 10-year marriage in 2010. She said she met him on Match.com, and he proposed to her months later — on the same day his divorce from previous wife was finalized. He was charming and smart, Leising said, but she grew suspicious of his "grandiose" claims of wealth and prominence.

Noreen Kumeta Rudd's death was initially ruled accidental after her husband, Donnie Rudd, told police that their car ran off the road and she fell out of the car and hit her head on a rock, Russell said. He told police he had carried her body to the car after the accident, Russell said.

Noreen was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin where she was pronounced dead due to an alleged fractured neck, Russell said. No autopsy was performed so an exact cause of death was not determined...

Russell... obtained an exhumation order from Cook County Circuit Court and performed an autopsy on Noreen's remains. The autopsy determined the cause of death was craniocerebral injuries due to blunt force trauma to the head and the manner to be a homicide, he said.

A Cook County grand jury has indicted a former Chicago-area attorney and school board member in the death of his new bride more than 40 years ago.

Donnie Rudd, 73, is charged with first-degree murder, announced Tuesday at a hearing in Rolling Meadows branch court. Rudd is being held on $4 million bond following his arrest last month in Sugar Land, Texas.

Rudd, formerly of Hoffman Estates, sat silently in a wheelchair as Assistant State's Attorney Maria McCarthy read the indictment. Rudd is suffering from colon cancer and continues to undergo treatment at the Cook County Jail infirmary, said his defense attorney, Timothy Grace.

Man charged with wife's 1973 Barrington Township murder focus of TV special

March 20, 2018

"A former Chicago-area attorney charged with his wife’s slaying more than four decades after her death is the subject of an Investigation Discovery special scheduled to air Sunday.

“Dateline NBC” correspondent Keith Morrison said he and his team spent “quite a while” investigating Donnie Rudd, who rose to prominence in the northwest suburbs as an attorney for condominium associations, a cable TV show host and a Schaumburg schools chief. The two-hour special — set to air at 7 p.m. — comes three months before Rudd is scheduled to stand trial for killing 19-year-old Noreen Kumeta Rudd, his wife of less than a month...

Kumeta Rudd was believed to have died in a single-car crash in Barrington Township in 1973, weeks after she married Rudd. Investigators exhumed her body from Dundee Township East Cemetery in 2013, and pathologists determined she suffered several blows to the head in a homicide. Cook County prosecutors say Rudd staged the crash and collected $120,000 in insurance proceeds.

Rudd, now 76 years old, was arrested at his Texas home in December 2015 and charged with first-degree murder. His attorney did not return a Tribune request for comment.

Investigators re-examined Kumeta Rudd’s death after Rudd was determined to be a suspect in the 1991 unsolved shooting death of an Arlington Heights interior designer. Lauretta Tabak-Bodtke, who was Rudd’s legal client, had reportedly threatened to file a complaint against him with state authorities. Neighbors said they saw Rudd’s car outside Tabak-Bodtke's home on the day of her murder. He has not been charged in that killing...

His murder trial is scheduled to begin June 25 in Rolling Meadows branch court. A status hearing is set for April 18..."

Couldn't find much info on what's happening in the case, but I did find this which might help somehow- gives more info on Rudd like date of birth, etc. to search further??? I don't know.....

Barrington woman co-writes memoir about life with stepfather facing murder charges

July 1, 2016

"A Barrington woman whose stepfather was recently charged with murder in a cold case dating back to the 1970s has published a memoir with her sister this month, which they say was written to share their search for truth.

The self-published memoir, "Living with the Devil: A family's search for the truth in the face of deception, infidelity and murder," was co-written by Lori Hart and Cindy Mulligan, whose stepfather, Donnie Rudd, was charged last December with killing his 19-year-old wife in Barrington Hills more than 40 years ago.

"My sister and I had been working on the book for more than three years, but we didn't want to hurt the Arlington Heights police department's murder investigation," said Mulligan, 57, a real estate manager and married mother of two sons, who published the memoir using her maiden name, Cindy Hart.
"Even the police who interviewed us for their investigation said, 'this is a book,'" Mulligan said. "But at times, it was just too painful and hard to write, so we stopped for a while."

Rudd, 73, who is slated to appear at the Cook County Circuit Court in Rolling Meadows later this month, was arrested in Texas in December 2015, and charged with killing his wife, Noreen Kumeta Rudd in 1973...."

Car accident, or murder? 45 years later victim's husband goes on trial

6/23/2018

"...The final determination rests with jurors at Rolling Meadows Third Municipal District courthouse, who will hear testimony when Rudd's trial begins there on Monday.

Defense attorney Timothy Grace says his client is eager for his day in court.

Rudd, a Texas transplant who was living in Sugar Land, Texas, at the time of his arrest, has pleaded not guilty.

"We look forward to finally getting this case to trial," Grace said. "We believe the state has a very weak case and do not believe they'll come close to meeting their burden" of proof beyond a reasonable doubt required for a felony conviction...."
