Child bones found in planter box in San Francisco. http://news.yahoo.com/video/gruesome-discovery-child-bones-found-035345066.html

A woman gardening in San Francisco found a bone belonging to a child. Two bones were discovered at two apartment buildings at McAllister and Steiner streets, a block from Alamo Square Park, near the iconic row of Victorian houses called the "Painted Ladies". The planter boxes were put on the porch by a tenant in 2007 and a couple of weeks ago, she was trying to save the plants, but throw out the boxes after discovering they had termites. That is when she found a human bone in the soil.

Whoa!

So of this lady is the one to have purchased and planted the boxes in 2007 (no coffee yet, sorry if I am not reading this right), then someone came onto her porch and buried a child's bones in her planter? :gasp:

Okay....had a few sips of coffee. Re-read and see that it is an apartment building. Less brazen than if this were a private, detatched home. But, STILL.......

And where is the rest of the child's remains?

It sounded like someone else built the boxes. " the planter boxes were put on the porch by a tenant in 2007" http://abc7news.com/news/child-bones-found-in-planter-box-in-san-francisco/1125878/

seems very hastily ....hopefully someone remembers something..

I'm reading it that a previous tenant in 2007 built the planters (quite elaborate ones, judging by the picture) and the woman was trying to save the plants that tenant left behind. So not the same person. But it's not real clear, is it?

Interesting story...they definitely needed to word it better. The person who originally made the planters is not the same person that was removing plants from the planters recently. Here is more....they are now considering the bones might be linked to a cold case...

"Police put up the crime tape to preserve not only the planter boxes, but the dirt around the building. Anthropologists set up tents where they sifted through dirt, wondering if there were other body parts.

Toomey says the last time he can remember a similar police operation was two years ago in a house about a mile away in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. That is when investigators tore up the basement floor when cadaver dogs located bones in a house once occupied by a person of interest in the disappearance of Kevin Collins -- the 10-year-old boy who has been missing since 1984. However, the bones found turned out to be from an animal.

This latest discovery brings Toomey back to that cold case. He said, "The only case that I know of, of a child that is unsolved and the child's body has not been found is Kevin Collins in San Francisco. So when something like this happens... I mean, you have to think that way. Investigators are waiting for test results."

Child skeletal remains were found in two planter boxes in the Alamo Square area of San Francisco.

A woman gardening found the bones, which reportedly include a mandible and several molars, while throwing out a planter box that had become infested with termites. The boxes were placed there sometime in 2007, so it's likely the child has been dead for at least eight years. The age, race and sex of the child are all unknown.

There's some speculation that the bones belong to Kevin Collins, a 10-year-old who went missing in San Francisco in 1984. The Charley Project classifies his case as a non-family abduction.

"A resident made the discovery Nov. 23 while gardening, police said. "

should the title be changed? im not sure what the actual date is...?

"While one media outlet reported the bones belonged to a child, police and the medical examiner's office would not confirm that information.

"At this point, the investigation is still ongoing," Gatpandan said. "

either way, this is so sad... the fact that this person (kid?) couldve been there for all those years...

Human bones found in planters outside San Francisco home belonged to a child and another person

San Francisco police said on Wednesday a collection of human bones found in planters outside a home in November belonged to two individuals: a child, possibly as young as eight, and another person.

An analysis by the Medical Examiner revealed the bones were human, police told the San Francisco Chronicle.

The remains, which included parts of a jawbone and tailbone, were found in November by a resident near Alamo Square who was gardening, the Chronicle reported.

An attempt to match the bones with dental record was unsuccessful, police told ABC7.

One remaining option to establish the origin of the remains is DNA analysis.

'They'll be uploaded to the database and then they'll try to match it,' Discenza said.

'[We will] see if there are any missing persons, homicides, or anything like that to see if there's a match.'

Having gardened for more than 40 years, I usually use a pre-mixed soil in a planter, which would already have the soil amendments I'd need. It sounds as if the planter was not fitted with a pre-installed drip emitter, & if the plants were root-bound, there'd be no way the bones could have gotten into the soil after then. I'd be looking at who made/purchased the planters & used soil from a burial site..ugh, hard to write that, instead of a bagged mix.

Or the original box builder, assuming they were the original soil filler and planter, used bagged mix and stuck in bones as "trophies" - how sick to know that for years you and others are walking past planters that have bones.

What about Daphne Viola Webb? I know she disappeared from Oakland and her father committed suicide sometime after she disappeared, but the timeline has left my mind.

That's a good one to look at. I guess we wait on them to release the race/ethnicity of the bones, etc. They *should* be able to tell. I'll keep checking back. Here is an updated article. The bones actually belong to TWO different people--1 child and 1 adult. The skeletal remains are not full skeletons either. Read more here:
