Police believe Hatch had travelled from eastern Ontario on Dec. 16 and arrived in the Erin area later in the day or the following morning. Investigators say Hatch was known to hitch hike and it is believed that he travelled along Highway 7.

Anyone who may have seen or had contact with Hatch is asked to call OPP at 1-844-677-5010, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a tip online at csgw.tips.

Ontario Provincial Police are driving a photo of Frederick "John" Hatch across the province as part of a homicide investigation into the man's death.

The photo is mounted on a billboard van, which will be driven from the Town of Erin, where the body of the 65-year-old man was found last December, to the Ottawa area.
According to police, it is an "unprecedented" method of eliciting information from the public.

After requests for information in Frederick Hatch’s death on Twitter came up empty, the OPP decided to take the investigation on the road. The OPP have attached pictures of Hatch, contact information and a very easy to read $50 000 reward on the side of one of their vans in hopes of reaching a different demographic. Police learned that Hatch was known to hitch-hike, so over the next couple of weeks the van will retrace his tracks and park for about a week at each of the communities that line highway 7 between Erin and Ottawa.

[h=1]7,500 people to get texts asking for info in Frederick John Hatch homicide, OPP say[/h]
[h=3]Texts in English, French will be sent Thursday to numbers that used a cell tower in area victim was last seen[/h] CBC News Posted:Last Updated: Oct 27, 2016

In a move they're describing as "extraordinary" and "unprecedented," Ontario Provincial Police will send text messages to about 7,500 people on Thursday to ask for information about an unsolved homicide.

Investigators are calling it a "digital canvass" — the high-tech equivalent of knocking on thousands of doors for information.
The partially burned body of Frederick John Hatch, a 65-year-old from Toronto, was discovered by a motorist on the side of a road near Erin, Ont. — a small community about 50 kilometres west of Toronto.

The body was found just before 6:45 a.m. ET on Dec. 17, 2015. It was located east of 10th Line off Wellington Road 124, just north of Erin.
Hatch had last been seen in Ottawa the day before, at about 1 p.m., inside a Dollar Tree discount store near West Hunt Club and Merivale roads.

Sarah Bowers-Peter, program coordinator with Crime Stoppers Guelph-Wellington, said Crime Stoppers is open to receiving any and all tips from the public related to Hatch.

“The beauty of Crime Stoppers is that people are anonymous when they contact us,” she said. “There could be people who do have information currently and just aren’t comfortable stepping forward through regular police contacts,” she said. “Crime Stoppers is a way for the them to reveal that information safely, confidentially and anonymously. We encourage people to do so, especially in a case like this.”
Tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477). Call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or visit that nearest police authority. More information is available on the OPP website at www.opp.ca.

[h=1]COLD CASE: Transient’s 2015 murder remains an open case for OPP[/h]
A small, early morning brush fire near Erin in December 2015 led to a body’s discovery and, so far, years of blank mystery.

Members of the Erin Fire Department and Wellington OPP responded to a call Dec. 17, 2015, about a brush fire in a wooded area along Wellington County Road 124 east of 10th Line near Erin. It’s an area not uncommon in rural Ontario littered with garbage and where refuse is dumped.

Through the course of extinguishing the small fire, firefighters and police found the body of a 65-year-old man in the wooded area. Frederick (John) Hatch, of no fixed address, was last seen a day before in Ottawa at about 1 p.m. while shopping at a Dollar Tree Store there.
The distance between Ottawa and Erin is about 516 kilometres. Police say they don’t know how Hatch travelled that distance, which could take about five hours to drive. Investigators say Hatch was known to hitchhike frequently.

OPP homicide detectives have remained steadfast in keeping secret Hatch’s cause of death. Those involved with the case say that detail, the means of Hatch’s death, is an important investigative tool.

Initial speculation held the body had been dumped and set on fire, one of the theories being Hatch was murdered somewhere else and that his body was transported to the dump site where police and firefighters found it.

Cold case: Police still looking for clues in slaying of John Hatch
"Three years after John Hatch was found dead, police have reissued a call for witnesses to come forward to help solve the homicide case.

Frederick “John” Hatch was last seen alive on Dec. 16, 2015 between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of West Hunt Club Road and Merivale Road. His partially-burned body was discovered about 500 kilometres away the next day in a ditch near the town of Erin after the fire department and OPP responded to a call about a brush fire.

The Ontario Province Police have been searching for Hatch’s killer ever since. The cause of death has never been revealed.

Hatch, 65, was described as a transient and pensioner who was known to hitchhike frequently. He stayed with acquaintances where possible, or else on the streets when it was not. He was a Canada Pension Plan recipient and received Old Age benefits.
