Labour dispute at Toronto prison delaying court proceeds, judges, lawyers say

Judges and lawyers say labour troubles at Toronto’s South Detention Centre are slowing down proceedings in several trials, including that of accused killer Dellen Millard.

The jail has been plagued by problems since opening in 2014, caused in part by an ongoing labour dispute between the provincial government and OPSEU, the union representing correctional officers.

Millard finally entered the court at around 12:30 p.m. on Monday -- nearly three hours after he was supposed to arrive.
“I actually started in transit at 6 a.m. this morning,” Millard to the judge. “I didn’t arrive here until 12.”
OPSEU denies that there was any delay in transporting Millard to the hearing.

AFAIK there has been no confirmed statement about a delay in the trial regarding TB's murder, but the video linked above made mention there is delay of at least two weeks in the preliminary hearing for WM's alleged murder.

A suspect in the death of Tim Bosma is set to begin a preliminary hearing in Toronto on Monday on first-degree murder charges connected to the death of his father.

The elder Millard died in November 2012 and his death was initially ruled a suicide.

Jury selection for that trial is expected to start in Hamilton court on Jan. 18.

Oh course that date January 18th, being the date set for trial for the murder of TB.
MOO and HTH.

.

Should be interesting how it plays out .... I think DM is representing himself on this one . Are preliminary Hearings open to the media , or behind closed doors ?

So glad to have a thread open again! Happy New Year, everyone. Hope 2016 brings some justice for the Bosmas and for the Babcocks in 2017.

Very interesting Arnie, I'm waiting with bated breath on all these trials.

Nice to see you all here again folks,

I believe that DM has opted to represent himself in the Laura Babcock trial only. I'll find a link.

ETA -Check ABro's blog. She's a fantastic journalist but I'm unsure of whether her blog is considered MSM or not.

The province said there was a delay in transporting the accused, but that it was not related to job action at the prison.
So if not job action, why did it take 3.5 hours to get from the South Toronto Detention Center to the Jane and Finch Courthouse? Was Boushy there waiting in court too?

Just a couple of highlights from the CHCH video

0:38 ff: He came in alone, no family or friends were in the courthouse to watch his first appearance in this case

1:16 ff: Now throughout his first appearance, he was making several submissions himself for reading material, and outside externally supplied lunches while he's going to be staying at that centre.

So DM is ordering take-out for the duration of WM's PI then, from the 4th to the 15th? You can't say wealth doesn't bring privileges.

The very next business day the jury selection for the TB trial begins...if the WM PI runs long because of the labour dispute delays, will that affect the timing of the jury selection and so forth?

Swedie's post under your post there is the full text of that video (just clarifying!)

Hmmm...the reporter doesn't mention DM's lawyer at all in this report. Only that DM is very articulate and seems unfazed by all the charges and that he addressed the judge several times yesterday. I wonder if he still has a lawyer for this trial too?

The clock is ticking on a strike that could see 6 000 unionized correctional, parole and probation officers walk off the job this Sunday. Members of the union who may strike say overcrowding and under staffing in jails are the reason they already rejected a tentative deal with the Ontario government.

Judges and lawyers say labour troubles are slowing down proceedings in several trials, including that of accused killer Dellen Millard who was several hours late to his court hearing on Monday.
